R. J. Waugh School

Carberry, Manitoba, Canada

April 1, 2002: Tunia arrived at our school today. She is with us in Mrs. Sallow's Grade 2 class. Everyone was very excited. She arrived on April Fool's Day! We are very happy to have Tunia visit us. We will take very good care of her and show her around. It is supposed to be spring here, but it is snowing today. Oh well, we think Tunia will get to see spring arrive in Carberry, Manitoba before she leaves later this month.

April 5, 2002: We are getting to know Tunia. We are passing her around and reading to her. We have made ladybugs for art and we are researching ladybugs and making a bulletin board about them. We are taking pictures of Tunia in our
school and we will send them to you.

Even though it is spring here in Manitoba, Mother Nature is keeping the snow around for a while longer. We took Tunia outside to show her around. She enjoyed our walk in the snow.

We are collecting ladybug books, and anything else we can find about these wonderful beetles. Here is how our bulletin board looks so far. We are learning lots of interesting facts about ladybugs.

We made ladybugs out of paper plates. Here is our group of ladybugs with Tunia. The children have been bringing in ladybug items. Tunia feels right at home with her new friends.

Since it is too cold here for any plants to be growing, we decided to make our own picture gardens. Here is Tunia sitting in front of a garden scene with some of her friends.

April 16, 2002: We would like to tell you a bit about our community, Carberry, Manitoba, Canada. Carberry is a small town of about 1200 people. We are located near the trans Canada highway, about 200 km from the capital city, Winnipeg.

Most of the children at out school are from the country, and they ride the bus to school. We have an elementary school with about 300
students, and a High School that has about the same number.

The main thing that we farm around Carberry is potatoes. We grow lots of potatoes and take them to the potato plant just outside of town. It is called Midwest Foods. They make french fries to sell to McDonald's restaurants in western Canada.

Carberry is close to a provincial park called Sprucewoods Park. It got that name because lots of spruce trees grow in the area. We also have maple trees, poplar trees and elm trees. It is fun to go to Sprucewoods Park because you can do things like hiking, canoeing, swimming, and mini-golf. In the winter you can go sledding, skating, cross-country skiing and skidooing. One of the things that Sprucewoods Park is known for is its desert. Yes, we have a desert in Manitoba, in the middle of the prairies. That is very unusual, so lots of people come to hike in the desert. If you are lucky you might see a snake or a skink (that is a type of lizard).

Manitoba has many interesting animals. Some of them are deer, moose, bear, lynx, cougars, fox. porcupine, bison, beavers, skinks, and squirrels. One animal you can see in northern Manitoba is the polar bear, but that is very far from here.

We would like to tell you about our provincial flower. It is the prairie crocus. It is a sign of spring because it is the first wild flower to come up in the spring, sometimes coming up when there is still snow on the ground! It is a light purple flower that has furry petals and stems.

April 23, 2002: We are having a going away party for Tunia today. We are having music and snacks. We are very sad to see Tunia go but we have had an excellent time with her. Because we had Tunia here, we learned a lot about ladybugs. We have searched for ladybugs around our homes. Some students brought ladybugs into the classroom in jars. We think Tunia learned a lot about us too. She even learned some French with us, because in Canada we study French. We have also done lots of ladybug math problems. Tunia has listened to us read and do math groups. She can even tell time! One day we had a fire drill and Tunia got scared. Now she knows a lot about safety.

April 24, 2002: We had a wonderful time at the going away party for Tunia. We bundled her up and sent her on her way to British Columbia. Bon voyage, Tunia. Have a good time in BC. You will surely notice a difference in the weather there!
