January, 2002: Tunia finally arrived in Witless Bay, Newfoundland. The students were glad to finally meet her. We are the Grade 1 classes at St. Bernard's Primary, located in Witless Bay on the Southern Shore of the Province Newfoundland and Labrador. Our school is small. We only have K-3, with a total of 134 students. Students come from Bay Bulls, Witless Bay, Tor's Cove, Mobile, Burnt Cove and Bauline.

Above is a photo of St. Bernard's. It is a green brick building with a flat black roof. There is a playground, parking lot, really nice teachers, nice students (133 in the whole school), and classrooms grades K-3. There are 16 students in Mrs. Cahill's grade 1 class. We learn lots of things: how to spell, how to read, how to do math, and how to do our calendar. The water in the background is the ocean. Witless Bay is about 30 kilometers from St. John's. St. John's is the capital city of Newfoundland. The children who attend St. Bernard's come from Witless Bay and the surrounding communities of Bay Bulls, Mobile, Tors Cove, and Burnt Cove. These communities are a part of Newfoundland's Southern Shore. Our community of Witless Bay is on the Southern Shore. We are on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. We have a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean from our classroom window and in the spring and summer we get to see many icebergs and whales. |

In social studies, we are learning about families, our communities, and trees and plants. In science, we're learning about the weather. In math, we are learning about pluses. |
We had a winter storm on Wednesday. All the schools were closed. Here is a picture of Tunia after the storm had passed by. |

Tunia is inside relaxing with Ms. Critch's dog, Jenny. |
When we got back to school there was so much snow that the picture above was taken. Tunia is sitting on snow that covers a pine tree. |
