Chippewa Elementary School

Brecksville, Ohio

February 3, 2004: The children were thrilled to see that Tunia made it safely to our school. They have seen her adventures at other schools and are looking forward to sharing their days with her. Because we are learning cursive at this time in second grade, Tunia received her own nametag in cursive on her very own desk. One of the students even made her a bookbag. It fits her well!

Look at Tunia with her nametag and bookbag!

February 6, 2004: Tunia arrived during our Science Is Significant week. She loved to go to the various experiments with the kids to see what they were learning. Of course, Tunia loved the sound wave experiment using a tuning fork. Insects get plenty of practice with sound waves while flying from place to place! Tunia also learned what happens to a rocket when the fuel is baking soda and vinegar. The science assembly was so much fun! Tunia saw how the mad scientist gave us an extra "hand" to help with projects. Polymer was a new word we all learned.

What is Tunia doing with that fork?

Tunia enjoyed the rocket experiment.

Tunia agrees that an extra hand can be helpful.

February 9, 2004: Brecksville is a suburb of Cleveland, which is in northeast Ohio. To the north of us is Lake Erie and beyond that is the country of Canada.

Since Tunia loves nature, we just had to tell her about the Emerald Necklace. It is the Cleveland park system that encircles the city. There are 14 reservations that are part of the parks, with over 20,000 acres of various landscapes. Brecksville is fortunate to have one of these reservations in its suburb. Tunia loved seeing part of the park, even though it was snow-covered. She does understand about plants being dormant.

Can you find Tunia in this photo naming the Brecksville Reservation, which is part of the Emerald Necklace?

This snowy photo shows another scene from the Emerald Necklace.

February 13, 2004:

Mrs. Schapel’s class celebrated Valentine’s Day today. Here is Tunia with some of the many valentines she received.

February 16, 2004: There are also many plants growing Chippewa School. In fact, there are three courtyards full of plants! Between the first and second grade hallways is the herb courtyard. During the growing season, we find plants like mint, thyme, sage, lemon balm, and rosemary for the children to enjoy.

Though Tunia didn’t get to see the actual herbs, she loved getting a breath of fresh air and a bird’s-eye view of the garden.

February 18, 2004: Mrs. Schapel’s class is fortunate to have a pet guinea pig named Snowball. When Tunia found out that Snowball eats parsley, she was thrilled to be able to feed her some. Tunia got to see an herb after all!

February 20, 2004: For Tunia to feel at home and to learn more about ladybugs, Mrs. Schapel shared some ladybug books with the class during her stay. Tunia didn’t mind hearing her favorite story one more time, The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle and the children just loved listening to it. After learning about one of Tunia’s favorite foods (aphids) from our nonfiction books, the students will be on the lookout for them when the weather permits.

The children are sad to see Tunia leave but they know she has other schools to visit and other children to meet. In the next photo, some ladybug books and mementos from the children surround her. We wish her well!
