Tunia visited a tropical rainforest during the summer. Can you see one of the tiny animals she met there? |

Tunia visited the Caribbean National Forest. It is called El Yunque. It is the only tropical rainforest in the National Forest system. El Yunque is in Puerto Rico on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo. It rains every day in El Yunque. Parts of the El Yunque rainforest have been protected and set aside as a national park and nature area. |

At left is one of the ferns Tunia saw in El Yunque. The leaves of ferns are called fronds. In the photo, a frond is ready to unfurl (open up). It is at the top center of the photo. Flowers don't grow on ferns. Ferns grow from spores instead of from seeds. |

At right is a yellow mandevilla, a tropical plant that Tunia saw in El Yunque. It needs warm temperatures to grow, so it grows well in the tropical rainforest. |
