The Rancho Bernardo Library Olive Tree Gate       1996
Laser-cut Steel/Sandblasted Glass
10' x 40'

Commissioned by the City of San Diego for the RANCHO BERNARDO BRANCH LIBRARY in Rancho Bernardo.  Implemented and coordinated by Gail Goldman, 1010 Second Ave. Ste. 555, San Diego, CA 92101-4904, 619-533-3051 and Alma Ronis and Associates, Fine Art, 7661 Girard Ave. Ste.130, La Jolla, CA 92037, 619-551-1272.

The gate is constructed of laser cut steel that has been chemically oxidized and sealed with a preservative clear coat.  In it's closed position it stands alone as a silhouette of a bare olive tree and surrounding plants.  In it's open position when most of the patrons of the library are likely to view the gate, it intersects with large panes of ¾" glass upon which the foliage of the olive tree has been sandblasted.  This completes the tree in the same sense that no library is complete without it's most important ingredient: the community itself.
