As part of the City of Ojai's changing sculpture program,  this piece is on temporary loan for one year (2005) in the Ojai Plaza, Ojai, CA. "Scion" is an abstraction of the first stages of a sprouting tree and may be interpreted as an analogy to life and growth in the community and that from small beginnings, great things may grow. sci·on -  n. 1. A descendant or an heir.    2. Also ci·on,  A detached shoot or twig containing buds from a woody plant, used in grafting. The lower portion of the sculpture is constructed of laser-cut and oxidized steel that represents the "roots" of the young plant.  Above the steel "root" structure there is a laminated glass sphere representing the "seed" from which the plant germinates.  Above the glass sphere is a single branch, twisted, carved and smoothed citrus tree studded with copper roofing nails and copper bars oxidized a verde green.
