As part of the "Urban Tree Project" implemented by the Port of San Diego in an open competition,  this piece is one of thirty "art trees" on temporary loan for one year (2004)  along the embarcadero of downtown San Diego.  This sculpture is one of two from the project that has subsequently been purchased by the Port District and is scheduled for permanent installation at the San Diego Convention Center.

"Tap Root & Growth" is an abstracted tree comprised of an aluminum cone balanced on it's tip with a 24" diameter glass disc above acting as a large light refractor gathering and dispersing the available sunlight.  Above the disc is a 12" diameter oxidized steel sphere with a gnarled and carved tree covered with copper leaf.  Attached to the surface of the tree are numerous flexible stainless steel rods with prisms at the end of each.  The rods and prisms move freely in the wind catching the sunlight and refracting many patterns in the surrounding area.
