The imagery of  water and sun are ones that immediately come to mind when thinking of San Diego. I developed the concept for this fountain using glass, stone and metal on a large scale to represent that imagery.   The fountain is constructed of ¾" laminated plate glass in the form of a low cone, eight feet in diameter with a sloping limestone base.  The center of the cone contains a 16" diameter tube through which water is pumped to the top of the cone where it gently flows down and completely flushes the exterior face of the glass.  The blue-green color of the glass accentuates the water, reflecting and refracting natural and artificial light to it's surroundings.  Suspended above the fountain is a four foot diameter golden sphere which is illuminated naturally from the skylight above and from metal halide spotlights concealed in six black granite fins surrounding the fountain.  This warm glow from the sphere reflects back to the cone of water and enhances the ambiance of the rotunda in general with it's sun-like quality.
