CHICAGO ROWING (1980-1984)
Back when I was a graduate student in economics, and
Carla and I were newly weds, we participated in the University of Chicago
Co-Ed Crew. The following page lists some of the photographs, newsletters,
newspaper articles, and miscellaneous other items, that we collected during
the years that we rowed. (Actually, Carla collected all this stuff. All
I did was scan it....)
The Coed Crew
The University of Chicago Coed Crew
began as a men's rowing club in March 1976. The team worked out at
the Lincoln Park Boat Club and competed in races all over the U.S.
In June 1979 the Lincoln Park Boat house was closed for renovations.
The UC team was forced to relocate to the Chicago River where there were
numerous facility and equipment problems. (Apparently, there was
a boat accident during the summer of 1979, where the UC racing eight was
hit by a yacht on the Chicago River. See the Fall 1980 newsletter.)
The men were able to return to Lincoln Park in the Spring of 1980 and women
began rowing in Fall 1981. (I believe that the first woman rower
to join the then "Men's Crew" was Ingrid Hunt.) By Spring 1982,
the Men's Crew Club officially became a coed crew with men and women practicing
at the same time, sharing equipment and administrative responsibilities.
