Sunday, October 5, 2008, Randy Nowell, "The Diamond Cutter of Transcendental Wisdom: Know Thy Non-Self" The Buddha spent much of his 45 year ministry teaching that there is no such thing as a self, a soul, or any permanent special "thingy" that can transmigrate from one incarnation to the next. This teaching is known as Sunyata or the Doctrine of Emptiness and it is best summed up in a piece of Mahayana Buddhist sacred scripture called the Diamond Sutra. We will use the Diamond Sutra as our guide as we attempt to wrap our minds around the concepts of Emptiness and Non-Self and try to figure out why the Buddha said that this teaching was the most valuable and important understanding that anyone could give or receive.
