"Josiah Cleveland Usher, youngest son of Dr. Robert, died at New Britain, CT in 1894, aged 92. He was wholly unable to reconcile the names of his grandfather Hezekiah's family as given by Whitmore, with family tradition. Nothing is known in the Connecticut branch of the Usher family of this Hezekiah residing in Rhode Island; or of his having any such wife as Jane, or Jennie Greenleaf, or Elizabeth Whittemore; or any such children as Daniel, Jane, Elizabeth or Mary; or any such relatives by marriage as Dakin or Francis. It is since Josiah Cleveland Usher's death that the Massachusetts records, above referred to, have been examined and found to confirm the family tradition...." (From memorial to Roland G. Usher).

Information for the place of birth for the children was obtained from the Mormon library computer printout ref. numbers 8511608/1395997.

Josiah lived in Plymouth, CT and Plainville, CT. His occupation was "Tannery operator and farmer".

"Commemorative Biographical Record of Hartford County, Connecticut"
By J. H. Beers and Company 1901:

"Hon. Robert Cleveland Usher, one of the progressive citizens of Plainville, is a native of Connecticut, born April 19, 1841, in Plymouth, Litchfield County.  Dr. Robert Usher, his grandfather, born in New London, CT, practiced medicine in Westchester and vicinity.  He was twice wedded, and by his first wife had five children; by his second marriage to Annie Cone, he had eleven children, Josiah C., father of Robert C., born in August, 1802, in Chatham, CT, in early life operated a tannery in Plymouth, wither he removed in 1825, but impaired health obliged him to abandon that occupation and take up farming, in which he engaged some forty years. In 1845 he removed to Plainville, where he practically passed the rest of his days, dying, however, at New Britain, in April, 1893. Originally an Abolitionist, he afterward became a Republican. In religious faith he was a member of the Congregational Church, and he always took much interest in church work. In September, 1828, Josiah C. Usher married Ruth Frisbie, daughter of Abel Frisbie, of Bristol, CT, and children as follows were born to them: James, deceased at the age of seven years; Ruth Ann, wife of Francis H. Smith, of New Britain, formerly of Plainville; and Robert Cleveland, a sketch of whom immediately follows."
See Robert Cleveland Usher for the balance of this article.
I (Howard C, Usher, Jr.) have a copy of Josiah's Probate Court records in my files. I also have a copy of an old picture of him in my files.
