Richard Howard Usher
September 14, 1962 -

    Richard was born on 14 September 1962 at the base hospital on Walker AFB Roswell, NM.  He was the first child born to Howard Cooke Usher, Jr. and Sandra Lea Nelson.  His father was a 1st. Lt. in the United States Air Force undergoing flight crew training as a KC-135 Navigator at the time.  Shortly after Richard was born, his father was assigned to Homestead AFB, Homestead, FL.  The family lived for a couple of weeks in a rented home in Leisure City, just outside the base.  They then bought a home at 8975 S.W. 199 Street, Miami 57, FL., in Whispering Pines, where they lived until June 1967.  Richard lived temporarily in Montgomery, AL while his father was attending Squadron Officers School at Maxwell AFB from September to December 1964.     
    Richard's sister, Julia, was born at Homestead on 4 September 1965.  On 30 June 1967 his father was transferred to Bayshore Radar Bomb Site, Bayshore, MI.  The family lived for a short time in Charlevoix, MI and then moved into a rented home at 413 Pearl Street, Petoskey, MI.  During the two years here, his father was assigned to two six month temporary tours in Vietnam.  Richard's brother, William, was born at Petoskey on 25 June 1969.
    On 31 July 1969 his father was transferred to Plattsburgh AFB, Plattsburgh, NY. While waiting for base housing, Richard, Julia, William and their mother stayed for a short time at their grandparent's (Howard and Clara Usher) summer cottage at Short Beach, CT.  Then the family moved into base housing, first at 217B New Jersey Street and then at 184C U.S. Oval.
    Richard's parents were divorced in September 1974.  His mother remarried and Richard, Julie and William lived with their mother and her new husband, Michael F. Schmidt, and remained at Plattsburgh AFB.  The family was transferred to Barksdale AFB, Shreveport, LA. in 1976.  They lived first in Parkland Villa Apartments while their new home was being built.  Then in 1977 the family moved to 611 Pine Cone Drive, in Tall Timbers, Haughton, LA.
    Richard graduated from Haughton High School on 20 May 1980.  He then attended Louisiana Tech at Ruston, LA and graduated on 7 March 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.  After graduation, he moved to Kansas City, MO where on 15 April 1985 he took a job with the City in the Building Codes Department.
    On 3 May 1986 Richard married Anne Charlie Story.  The wedding was held at St. John's United Methodist Church on Ward Parkway in Kansas City and the reception was at the Simpson House.  Richard first met Anne in Lincoln, NB, while spending a summer break from college at his mother's home in Omaha.  Michael F. Schmidt had been transferred to Offutt AFB, NB while Richard was attending Louisiana Tech.  Richard and Anne first lived in an apartment at 4738 Oak Street in Kansas City and then bought a home at 4730 Holly Street, Kansas City, MO on November 1986.  Their son, Joseph Sailor Usher, was born on 4 March 1994.
    They sold their home at 4730 Holly Street  and moved to a loft apartment at 401 Washington Street in Kansas City. This apartment was temporary housing while building their new home at 1648 Madison.
