About the pictures:

The pictures and movie linked above were taken October 13 and 14, 2001. Some of  the pictures were taken from the bank with a digital camera, and others with a waterproof 35mm film camera.

About the River:

The Russell Fork is well known for the section inside the gorge at Breaks Interstate Park with class 5 rapids, however there is an intermediate section above and below the gorge.

The upper section can begin at the Flannagan Dam on the Pound River and end at Garden Hole inside the park. The Pound is a short section of class 2 water before emptying into the Russell Fork at Bartlick. Immediately below the confluence is the bridge and dam that are described in most guidebooks. The rapids on this section of the Russell Fork remind me of parts of the Nolichucky, and it has several rapids that could be considered class 3. Some rapids are longer stretches with pourovers and fast water, and others are more abrupt ledges. The takeout is the putin for the class 5 section.

The lower section put-in can be at Pool Hole above Elkhorn City. Pool Hole seems to be a private campground along the river at the bottom of a steep road. The takeout is at a park in Elkhorn City near the rescue squad. Most the this section is class 2 to 3, with the most interesting rapid being Meatgrinder. It has a strong hole on river left with some shallow water covering rocks below. It can be sneaked on the right.
