MELVIN JONES FELLOWS
The International
Association of Lions Clubs began as the dream of Chicago businessman Melvin
Jones. He believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons
from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and
the world at large. His personal code,
"You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else,"
became a guiding principle for public-spirited people the world over.In 1968 the International Association of Lions Clubs began the Lions Clubs International Foundation to help Lions serve the world. Donations provide funding in the form of grants to financially assist Lions with large-scale humanitarian projects that are too extensive for them to finance on their own. The Foundation aids Lions in making a greater impact in their local communities, as well as around the world. Through the Foundation, Lions ease pain and suffering and bring healing and hope to people worldwide. In 1973 the Foundation began the Melvin Jones Fellowship as a means to honor Melvin Jones and as a way for Lions Club to recognize the outstanding humanitarian work performed by their members. The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the Foundations highest honor. Each year the Van Buren Lions Club honors one of its members with the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Those honorees are:
