1961

1960 Best Picture: Ben Hur
"Centralization" to the Town of Montgomery immediately brought the hope that new structures would soon be underway to house the bulging classrooms of the three village schools and the rural school at St. Andrews.   On July 2, 1958, when the new centralized district was one day old, the unofficially-named "Montgomery Central School District" held its organizational election and voted to seat nine members on the Board of Education.  This session lasted eight hours, concluding at 4:a.m.  As soon as the election was complete, discussions about the new buildings began.  In January of 1959 the voters selected the Russell Site as the home for the proposed East Coldenham Elementary School, and the Muller Site for the Jr-Sr High School.  The following June, the voters approved a School Bond Issue in the amount of $4,230,000 which would include the erection of these new buildings and renovation of the existing village schools.  By mid-March of 1960, men and machinery had begun construction of what was to become Valley Central Jr.-Sr. High School.  After 18 months of labor, the new building was ready to welcome its eager students on September 6, 1961 -- a symbol of modern education for the youth of the day and a promise of growth for the communities it serves.

1961:  The new building on Route 17K was under construction ... with students from Walden, Montgomery, Maybrook, Coldenham and surrounding areas within the Valley Central School District eagerly awaiting its opening on  September 6, 1961.
