Chapter 2 Misfortune Befalls the Twins author: Henos - red , AOR - violet , Thenna - blue
The boy squints his eyes because of the noise. Then, as it quiets down, he looks his mirror-image straight in the eye and replies:"You're whining again, sis."
The girl immediately throws in another squeal and the boy has to grab her to force her to stop. With his hand over her mouth he whispers:
"Now stop it....or I'll tickle you to death!"
With that he pinches her sides and the girl pulls herself free, screaming and running around with the laughing boy on her heels....
The two children don't notice the sudden cold draft as the window opens. They run around screaming and playing. A shadow appears behind the curtains.
Henos grabs his sister and wrestles her to the ground.
"Stop!!!" she screams, laughing out loud.
"Mercy?"
"Yes, yes...."
Suddenly her eyes open wide and she stares up.
"What?" asks the boy in surprise. Then he turns around, to see a large man hover over them. Something heavy hits him on the head and the lights go out...........
The man in grey pulls the boy back and grabs the little girl. She stares at him with eyes as big as disks, too scared to even scream. He is dressed in a grey robe with a black cross on the front and somehow it looks familiar.
"Take them both!"
Another man comes from behind and grabs the girl and puts his hand over her mouth as she tries to scream. He groans when she bites him, but holds her tight, while the first man opens a sack. The girl is put in and she wrestles in vain against the rough fabric. She can hear the sounds of her brother being put in a second sack. Then strong hands lift her up and carry her away.
Panic sets in and she feels as though she is suffocating. She struggles against the sack but relents when the man tightens his grip on her body... crushing her. Then as suddenly as the men had appeared in the house, she feels her body flying through the air and hears a voice bellowing..
"Stupid fucking atheist! That's what you get for biting me."
Her body hits the metallic floor of the truck... and then her head. There is a sharp pain and then it all seems warm and fuzzy. From a far distance she hears something sliding across the floor.. then it hits her. It is her brother's feet that impacts her back first; knocking her a few more feet inward. The door closes with a loud grating noise, setting explosives off in her head. She feels the vibrations as the truck is started and speeds them away from their home.
"Henos? Are you okay?" she softly whispers..
There's no answer. She sits up in the sack only to fall over... her head pounding.. her shoulder lands on his legs.. She calls out to him once more before her mind fades to black....
Several hours later she wakes up... laying on a bed in an unfamiliar room. She rolls over to one side and comes face to face with her brother. Her hand quickly goes to his shoulder and she shakes him...
"Henos.. Henos.. You have to wake up." her voice is quiet but urgent.
She shakes him again but to no avail. Terror washes over her.. thinking he might be dead. She throws her leg over him and pushes herself up to a sitting position on his stomach. Her head is pounding but she barely notices. He can't be dead... he just can't. She grabs both of his shoulders and starts shaking him again... screaming..
"WAKE UP!"
His eyelids flutter.. Overwhelmed with emotion, she starts to cry..
"Please wake up... I'm scared."
The boy coughs and opens his eyes. His arms start to push his sister off him in attempt to get more air.
"Please..." he coughs, "I'm....alright."
He smiles faintly as his dear sister hugs him joyfully.
Moments later they are sitting next to each other and Henos wipes the tears from her cheeks.
"Don't be scared. We knew this could happen."
"I'm not scared," says Thenna, "I was only worried about you."
Henos nods, "I was worried about you too, when they hit me on my head."
Again they hug each other for a while.
"What will they do to us?" Thenna asks.
"They will try to scare us," Henos replies.
"They can't scare us." The girl looks very resolute and they both giggle.
