Afternoon Tea
According to legend, it was Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford (1783—1857), who originated the delightful institution of afternoon tea. Luncheon was not common in certain country houses, and between breakfast and dinner (often served as late as 9 o’clock), Anna experienced “a sinking feeling.” She remedied this by dining in her boudoir on tea, cakes, tarts and biscuits. Many other ladies soon joined her in that secret indulgence and by the early 1800’s, it was a fashionable and well-established custom. Afternoon tea gained popularity through Victorian and Edwardian times, leading to the opening of tea shops and tea rooms for the enjoyment of the general public.
