The Village Squares Square Dance Club The
Village Squares Square Dance Club was founded in 1984 and sanctioned in 1987.
The founding members and club presidents during the first four years were Murray
and Ida Rose. All club members are current residents of Ocean Hills Country Club.
Visitors are always welcome but non OHCC residents must contact a club member
for admission. Square
dancing is one of the best social activities available. Frequently referred to
as "friendship set to music", square dancing is a lot of fun combined with physical
and mental exercise. The square dance is choreographed spontaneously by the "caller"
who combines standard movements to music. There are well over one hundred movements
to be learned at our dance level, Mainstream-Plus, and each dance differs from
its predecessor. Square
dancing is not a "country western" activity. We dance to all types of music including
pop, swing, jazz and rock. Country western is included, but is not dominant over
any other. Plus level dances are held each Wednesday in the Abravanel Hall from
6:30pm to 8:30pm. Classes
are held in the Abravanel Hall each Tuesday afternoon from 3:00pm to 5:00pm and
casual attire is acceptable. The class is a year in duration with graduation typically
around the middle of December. There is an open enrollment period during the second
half of January each year. After that time partners are typically required and
no more class members are admitted, except for people having previous square dance
experience. Once
you have learned to square dance you can enjoy the activity almost anywhere in
the world. The movements are standardized worldwide and the calls are always in
English. Square dance clubs exist in most cities and certainly the major cities
in industrialized nations. All square dance clubs welcome visitors at their dances.
Square
dance conventions are held all over the United States providing opportunities
to travel and meet other people for those wishing to do so.
