Whether you hear stories through the media or not, there are always people suffering from a wide variety of health related problems. Folks from all walks of life and all places on earth can be affected. From one person undergoing an operation to an innocent victum of an auto accident to hundreds of people impacted by natural disasters. They all share one thing in common, that of needing blood, organs, or tissue in order to survive or be restored to better health.
Blood is always needed to replace losses at accident and injury scenes or as the result of surgery. Sometimes the amount of blood needed for a patient is more than what one donor can contribute. Blood types and chemical makeup also vary among people. The more people who donate blood expands the possible availability of a match when blood is needed.
It is easy to donate blood. There is often a payment made to donors who give blood at collection centers. Since the body constantly produces more, people can donate blood more than just once. In fact, several people make it an annual event to do this in rememberance of a certain event in their life or the life of a loved one.
People can also sign up to be organ or tissue donors. When they pass away, some of their organs or tissues can possibly be transplanted to somebody in need. Children can be signed up by parents or guardians. Organs and tissue can only be kept a short time before a transplant occurs. Patients in need usually have to wait until donor items are available, often for several years. Sadly, some patients do not live long enough to receive a transplant.
Just like blood, donated orgrans and tissues need to match the patients types to be considered. The more people who sign up to be donors will increase the possibility that somebody in need might be able to receive this wonderful gift.
PLEASE contact your health care provider or hospital for information on how to become a donor in your area and where to go. You may also visit the websites of the American Red Cross or the United Way for more information.
