Daughters of the American Revolution Contest                                      Due Date December 3rd

American History Essay Contest

Topic:  “What message did the Gettysburg Address communicate to our war-torn nation in 1862?  How are the ideals articulated in the speech still relevant for our country today?”

Length:  300-600 words

Form:  Essay is to be typed in Times New Roman (font 14).  All of the essay MUST be the student’s original work.  The title page must include:

  • Title:   The Ideals of the Gettysburg Address
  • Contestant’s full name and address.
  • Contestant’s telephone number (with area code)
  • Name of contestant’s school/grade level
  • Name of Sponsoring DAR chapter-

Princess Anne County Chapter

  • Number of words in essay

Bibliography:  Essay must have a bibliography listing all references utilized. Internet resources should be cited in similar format as printed resources.  Add the electronic address used to access the document as supplementary information.  Any essay with information copied directly from sources without using quotes will be disqualified.

Judging/Awards:  Judging will be based on historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness.  Pictures, maps, drawings, graphics, and other such additions will not be considered in judging and should not be included.

CHAPTER:  One essay at each grade level is selected as the chapter winner and forwarded to the state competition. (bronze medal)

STATE:  One essay at each grade level is selected as the state winner and forwarded to the division level. (silver medal)  The division level will forward their winner to the national level.

NATIONAL:  One essay in each grade is selected as the national winner.  A certificate, gold pin, and monetary award is presented to the winner at the Continental Congress in July 2009.

 

 

 

 

Junior American Citizens Contest

Theme:  America Land of Opportunity

People have been coming to America from all over the world seeking a better life for themselves and their children because America is a land of opportunity.  All Americans have many opportunities in their lives that will give them the chance to achieve their dreams and become whatever their hearts desire.

 

Art Contest

Poster-Design a poster using the theme.  Original art work only, not from other sources.  Minimum size: 8 ½”

x 11”  Maximum size 22” x 28”  NO rigid materials

Stamp Design-Design a postal stamp using the theme.  Original art work only.  5” x 7” drawn in the center of an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of white paper.

Photo Essay-Individual entry.  The student will submit not more than 24 color photographs illustrating the theme.  These photos must be the original photos taken by the child.  The photos should be mounted with glue on 8 ½ “ x 11” paper and bound in a three brad composition folder.  Brief captions may appear on each page.  Include a title page.  Remember, this is an ART contest, your pictures should tell the story.

Creative Expression Contest

Poem-Write an original poem, any style, of 200 words or less.  Entries should be on 8 ½ “ x 11” paper, either ruled or plain.

Short Story-Write an original short story of 500 words or less.  The story may be written from the first person or third person point of view.  Entries should be on 8 ½ “ x 11” paper, either ruled or plain.

Judging/Awards-participation cards from the local chapter:  additional awards for state and national winners.
