a meandering series of thoughts about everything and nothing
Smokebreak TV

A few co-workers of mine have put together a cable access program called "Smokebreak TV" heres a link to their site with video etc. - SmokebreakTV

Here are a few quick words about it. Amateurish, Juvenile, Disgruntled, Hilarious, and Filler.

Here are a few more words about it. By far the best moment is Eric talking about lighting bedrooms. This is a great skill for him to have in his new career out in the San Fernando Valley. And it cuts to the point of the episode, there is no point. Emma completely steals the show and is in far too few scenes. The trained seal act about her liking the show is a bit subtle and very funny. Marshall pontificating on the class struggle has a pseudo depth to it that is brilliant.

But it looks like someone forgot that this was a half hour show. It showed great promise in the first 15 minutes, started to wind down in the next 5 and then mercilessly continued for another 10 minutes with no clear theme or content. What's worse is that those last few stories just weren't funny. Not even in a bulldada way. I'm a bulldada aficionado and this didn't even come close. Maybe if they took themselves more seriously it would be funnier. They didn't help develop the characters, explain what the hell was going on or the like. Next episode, concentrate on the narrative. Focus on the theme, and over shoot the episode by at least 2 hours so there's more material to work with.

In all, I'm really impressed that my friends did this. After some research (I read their blog) I was surprised to find out that they had to take some classes to get on the air. Their training shows throughout the entire episode in no apparaent way.

Seriously though, it takes real guts to put yourself out there like they did and I'm proud of my friends for doing it. keep it up. It can only get better (or worse, if you're pulling for bulldada).
