PURVES BIOGRAPHY

candidate photo Arthur Purves, 58, was raised in Washington, D.C., where he attended public schools through 8th grade.  He and his wife, Carol, are 31-year residents of Vienna.  They have two children, both of whom attended Fairfax County Public Schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade, and three grandchildren.  Mr. Purves earned a BA, MS, and MBA from the University of Pennsylvania and is a computer programmer.  Mr. Purves has been president of the Fairfax County Taxpayers Alliance for ten years and has served on Fairfax County Public Schools advisory committees for twelve years: Family Life Education (twice), the Fairfax Framework for Student Success, and Professional/Technical Studies.  He was president of the Thomas Jefferson High School crew boosters and Marshall High School lacrosse boosters, and is a former scoutmaster.  He is a member of the Fairfax County Republican Committee and the Fairfax Committee of 100.  He belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon).  In 1995 Mr. Purves ran as the Republican-endorsed school board candidate in Hunter Mill District.  In 2003 he ran again as an Independent candidate.  In 1999 he ran as an Independent candidate for chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.  Both times Mr. Purves ran as an Independent, there was no Republican candidate.  In 2001 and 2005, Mr. Purves unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in the 35th delegate district.  He was born in Munich, Germany, where his father was serving in the State Department during the post-war occupational government.
