asena,
one of Roanoke's most historic neighborhoods, has it all!
Convenient to Downtown and within walking distance to a revitalized
Grandin Village shopping district, Wasena offers the amenities of
a traditional neighborhood, such as a neighborhood school, shaded
streets, parks, sidewalks and City services, coupled with steadily
rising home values that remain affordable to buyers.
Named after a Native American word for "beautiful view," Wasena
consists of a traditional neighborhood street grid that extends
from river bottom to ridgetop. There are two parks in the neighborhood:
the small Triangle at the intersection of Hamilton and Kerns Avenues,
as well as the larger Wasena Park along the Roanoke River. Wasena
Park features a scenic drive and greenway, picnic pavilions, playgrounds,
lighted ball fields and a regional skate park.
The Wasena Neighborhood Forum was formed in 1983 and became a member
of the Roanoke Neighborhood Partnership in 1984. Ongoing activities
and projects over the years include the annual fall block party,
spaghetti dinners, a 5 K footrace, participation in Parks and Recreation
events such as the Eggstravaganza and the Halloween Hayride, beautification
and neighborhood watch, donations to local charities and participation
in the neighborhood planning process. In 2006, the WNF was able to plant 25 trees along Main Street and the Wasena Bridge. Hundreds of volunteer hours went into the planning and implementation of this project. Won't you join us on our next project or at our next meeting?
