The
following is a comprehensive lineage of Peter Ware and Mary Hickes prepared by
Norm McHan based on independent research and data received from numerous other
researchers. Please consider this a
“work in progress” which may be subject to change.
Most
of the lineage information regarding the King and Queen, King William and
Middlesex County, Virginia Ware families are purely speculative in nature at the
present time due to a lack of available documents.
1-Peter
Ware Sr. (c1608
c1613 probably Cork Co., Ireland Tenterden Co., Kent,
England-Bet 16 Sep 1657 and 10 Sep 1659 Hampton Parish, York
Co. VA). In 1647 Peter was an attorney for Robert Lewis in York Co., Virginia.
In 1675, Peter Ware, Jr. sells land in Queen’s Creek, Hampton Parish,
York Co., VA to Nathaniel Bacon in which he identified the land as having
belonged to his father, Peter Ware. Mary Hickes was identified in a 1659
Orphan’s Court document as the widow of Peter Ware, from this document it
appears Mary Hickes maintained her maiden name, which was an old Welsh custom, and
was likely of Welsh descent. In the same document immediately above
the paragraph regarding Mary Hickes, was a paragraph in which a remarried widow
was referred to as Mrs. Elizabeth Woods. It seems if Mary Hickes had
remarried they would have shown her as Mrs. Mary Hickes, wife of Mr. Hickes, and
widow of Peter Ware. It's possible that Mary was Peter's second wife and not the
mother of his children.
Children
of Peter Ware and Mary Hickes:
-2-Peter
Ware, Jr.
(c1632 probably Cork Co., Ireland-Bet 1675 and 23 May 1693 Hampton Parish, York
Co., VA), m. Jane Valentine, son/heir, he was appointed Asst. Constable in 1660,
and same year he and Nicholas I, witnessed a deposition. In 1662 he was
appointed surveyor, in 1663 he was listed as a headright with John Garrett, in
1665 he was appointed constable, in 1675 he sold land to Hon. Nathaniel Bacon
belonging to his father, that same year he purchased land in New Kent Co. next
to Col. William Claiborne, Edward Cardingbrook and John Ware. This land was also
adj. Jeremiah Rawlings, John Garrett and Nicholas Ware according to a 1683
patent.
--3-Valentine
Ware, Sr. (c1654
Hampton Parish, York Co., VA-c1704 Stratton Major Parish, King and Queen Co.,
VA) m. (Mary Dudley ?) d/o Wm/ Eliz. Cary. A Valentine Ware was listed on the
1704 Quit Rent Rolls for King and Queen Co. with 478a; it is unknown if this
Valentine Ware was Valentine Ware Sr. or Valentine Ware Jr.
-----4-Valentine
Ware, Jr. (1680 New Kent Co., VA or Before c1731 Stratton Major Parish, King and
Queen Co., VA) m. Sarah Leigh d/o William Lea and Mary Green, Vestryman, SM
1729-31. A Valentine Ware appeared on the
1704 Quit Rent Rolls with 478a; it is unknown if this was Valentine Ware Sr. or
Valentine Ware Jr. Valentine Ware was a Vestryman from 1729 to 1731, and it is
inferred in the Vestry Books that he died in 1731.
THE
EXISTENCE OF THE FOLLOWING VALENTINE WARE III IS UNPROVEN AND IS BASED ON A
VALENTINE BECOMING A PROCESSIONER IN 1731, AND THE EXISTENCE OF A 1739 VESTRYMAN
NAMED VALENTINE. PLEASE NOTE THAT VALENTINE COULD BE THE NEPHEW OF VALENTINE
WARE, JR. INSTEAD OF HIS SON.
---------5-Valentine
Ware III (c1700->1739 (likely between c1753 and c1756) m. Unknown. The
existence of this Valentine Ware is pure speculation and is based solely on the
fact that a Valentine Ware was appointed processioner between the Little
Heartquake Creek and the Great Heartquake Creek from 1731 to 1735. Other
Processioners in the area 1731-1735 included Humphrey Garrett and John Smith.
Valentine Ware Jr. would have been 50+ years old in 1731; this may have been too
old to become a new processioner. A Valentine Ware was also a Vestryman in 1739
King and Queen Co. VA.
THE
FOLLOWING IS UNPROVEN; AND MAY DESCEND FROM NICHOLAS WARE I, INSTEAD OF PETER
WARE, JR.

Christopher was a processioner 1755 to 1783-area between Tastine Swamp and Great

have been Christopher’s brother.
--------------7-John
Ware (<1766 K&Q Co. VA-<1824 at Gloucester Co. VA) m. Susan
“Susanna” Clarke. In 1787, John lived next to Samuel Ware and Christopher
Ware’s estate; he paid the 1787 taxes on Christopher's estate and paid 1790
personal taxes for Betty Ware with two tithes in her household. In 1794 and
1795, John is listed on the tax lists with 296a of land. In the 1790 land tax
listing for K&Q, a Dawson Cooke is listed with 296a of land and also taking
care of Christopher Ware’s 500a estate. Dawson Cooke purchased the 296a of
land from Steven Fields about 1787. Dawson is not listed on the 1787 tax list
and has 282a of land on the 1798 tax list. John Ware shows 346a of land on the
1800 Gloucester Co. VA land tax list but is not listed on the personal property
tax list. Dawson Cooke (died 1829) was the son of Mordecai Cooke of Gloucester
Co. and was Deputy Sheriff of K&Q from 1783-1787 (not listed on the 1787 tax
list though). Dawson’s daughter Ann married John Didlake and his daughter
Molly married the Reverend John Spencer, pastor of the Porpone Baptist Church.
The connection between John Ware and Dawson Cooke is unknown; it is quite
possible they were brothers-in-law, or stepbrothers.

14 Jun 1799 at Middlesex Co. VA. According to the 1787 tax list, Samuel lived in
K&Q Co., VA. From the 1790s until his death, Samuel lived on the Briery
Swamp (Middlesex Co. VA) southwest of Jamaica,
VA.
Notes:
Samuel Ware makes his first appearance on the 1787 tax list for K&Q County,
VA; this list shows his personal property was 1 black under 18, 3 horses, and 2
Cows. In 1787, he lived next to John Ware and Christopher Ware's estate. In
1787, John Ware paid the taxes on Christopher Ware’s estate. In 1792, Samuel
purchased 86-1/2 acres of land from William and Jane Owen for 86 lbs & 19
Shillings. The property was located
north of Ware Bridge, and the Dragon Run, on the Briery Swamp at Route 606
(northwest corner of Route 606 and the Briery Swamp), just south of State Road
17 in the Jamaica area. This property was bordered by the following families:
Ralph Watts (west), Robert Daniel (north), Charles Lee
(northeast), William Davis (east on northside of Route 606), Chesly
Daniel (southeast corner of Route
606 and Briery Swamp), and Sally Watts (south on the southside of Route 606)
(Middlesex Co. Deed Book 11, pg. 75-77). Samuel has 0 tithes on the 1787 K&Q
tax list, 0 tithes on the 1790 Middlesex tax list, and 2 tithes on the 1801
K&Q tax list. A tithe is defined as a white male over 16. It is questionable
whether Samuel had a son named Samuel Jr. since it has been confirmed Reuben and
Robert are sons and that Reuben married before 1805 and Robert was born 22 Jan
1784----the two tithes on the 1801 tax list were likely Reuben and
Robert. Samuel Jr. appears on an
1804/5 tax list only so he may be someone else's son.

Children
with Unidentified First Wife:
-------------------8-Samuel
Ware Jr. (c1781-c1805). Samuel may have had a son named Samuel Ware Jr. who
appeared on the K&Q tax lists for only one year in the early 1800s-this
Samuel may have died about 1805. I have also listed Samuel Ware Jr. as a
possible grandson of Edward Ware who died c1774.
-------------------8-Reuben
Edward Ware (c1782-NLT 8 Sep 1836 m. 1) Unknown c1804 2) Sarah Hardy (-NET 8 Sep

On 25 May 1835 Robert Mackan, Robert Daniel Sr., Will Garrett, Henry Layton, and
R. M. Segar go bond for $5,000.00 for William E. Ware as Administrator of Estate
of James Miller. Middlesex County C. H., Adm. Bond Book, Vol. 7, Page 190). This
James Miller may be the Reuben Ware’s father-in-law from his first marriage.

------------------------9-William
L. Ware (c1830-Between 1867 and 1870) s/o Reuben and Sarah Ware of Middlesex Co.
VA m. Maria Ann West (c1832-38 years old according to the 1870 Census) d/o Isaac
& Harriet West (c1809/1820-60 years old according to the 1870 census) on 19
Feb 1863 at Gloucester Co. VA. At the time of marriage, it was noted that
William was 24 years old and Maria was 23 years old; Both William and Maria’s
age must be incorrect. Reuben’s father, died in 1836. William was likely 34
years old instead of 24 years old and Maria is likely 32 years old instead of 23
years old when they married in 1863, which would suggest William might have
been, born c1830 and Maria was born c1832. William was a farmer from Middlesex
Co. VA. The 1870 Gloucester Co. VA Census, PetsworthTownnship, Household 418,
shows the following living in Maria Ann (West) Ware’s household: Isaac West
(32), Tho K. West (26), Joel N. West (23), Willitina West (21), Tho. L. West 13,
Harriet West (60), and Isaac Ware (2). The 1870 census data infers William L.
Ware was possibly deceased before 1870, and his widow was living in Petsworth
Parish, Gloucester Co. VA with her mother (father likely deceased) and her
siblings; the census also infers that Isaac Ware born c1867/c1868 (2 years old
at the time of the 1870 census) was likely a son of William L. and Maria Ann
(West) Ware.
-----------------------------------11-Isaac
Ware (c1867/c1868). Confirmed as son by 1870 Petsworth Parish, Gloucester Co. VA
Census as living in household #418, with his widowed mother, his grandmother
Harriet West, and his aunts and uncles on his mother’s side of the family.

Children
with Nancy Shipley:
-------------------8-William
Edward Ware (Bet 1795 and 1800
–Will Signed 6 Feb 1851/Recorded 28 Apr 1851). Never Married. Executor for
Father’s Will. William owned property running southeast along the western
border of the 250 acres Jamaica Dr. Wm. Gatewood
bought from Robert Mackan. In 1828, Samuel had leased 50 acres on the Briery
Swamp to William. Also, William inherited property from Samuel in 1830. If all
of this property belonged to Samuel, the property would have continued on to
Route 606. Also, for consideration, is that William’s 50 acres he leased from
Samuel in 1828 was bound by Henry Mickelborough, George Blakley’s estate, the
land of Nancy Watts, and the main road-therefore, the property must have been
east of Samuel’s original 1792 land purchase which was to the west of the
Briery Swamp.
NOTES:
William
was likely born c1800 in Middlesex Co. VA, and I believe him to be the eldest
son of Samuel and his second wife, Nancy Shipley, whom Samuel married in 1799.
However, there is always the possibility he was born earlier, and may
have been the son of Samuel and Samuel's Unknown first wife. Apparently, William
never married. His property (147 acres) was located southeast of Jamaica in
Middlesex Co. VA. Silas Ware bought the property on auction in November 1851 for
810.00 and on the same day sold the property to Nathaniel Daniel for $850.00.

I
Wm. E. Ware do constitute and make this my last will and testament in manner and

Pet unless it shall appear best to my executor to sell the crops for cash then
he can do so. I wish my executor to

somewhere in the western part of the United States) on account
of
the deformity of said Sylus. But, should the said Sylus (die) before me, then I
give all (of my estate) to my nephew Madison M. Ware, brother of said Sylus. I
hereby constitute and appoint my friend, Sen. Wm. L. Gatewood, my executor to

for the marriage was Robert Daniel Jr. The 1830 census shows Leroy H. Trice with
1 male 20-30 years old, 1 Female 20-30 years old, 2 males 15-20 years old, 1
females 15-20 years old, and 1 male 0-10 years old in his household. This would
infer Ann was born between 1799 and 1810 (likely born after her sister
Elizabeth).

named Frances who was born after the 1810 census, however, it is uncertain if
the Frances who married Augustus is Samuel’s daughter.

estate.
----------6-Edward
Ware. If Christopher Ware isn’t Samuel’s father, then Edward is the logical
candidate.
--------5-James
Ware. James may have died in the mid-1790s. It is uncertain if James is the
brother of Christopher or the brother of Samuel.
--3-Thomas
Ware II (c1660-Before 6 Oct 1703). In 1699 Thomas Ware leased and released land
in K&Q County. On 25 Apr 1701 Thomas Ware was one of 48 persons imported by
Richard Littlepage of K&Q for patent of Pamunkey Neck land on Mattaponi
River. On 12 Apr 1702 Thomas Ware patented 620 acres of land in Pamunkey Neck on
Necatawance Swamp (Modern Day Harrison Creek). When Thomas died, Matthew Page,
who was also a 1701 headright of Richard Littlepage, inventoried his estate;
Matthew Page died in 1804. 6 Oct 1703-William Lea (Thomas' brother-in-law
?)-Escheated land in Kg Wm Co from Thomas Ware dec'd by inquisition from Mathew
Page. Land was adjacent to John Madison's Mill on the north side of the
Mattapony River in St. Stephen's Parish. Corner Hickory of John Taylor's landing
to Anne Wiltshire's line, to Thomas Camp's. Recorded 4 Dec 1714.
-----4-Thomas
Ware III (c1693-) In 1724 Thomas Ware patented 150 acres of new land in St.
John's Parish, King William Co. VA, on condition of seating for the import of 3
persons-----he failed to seat, so John Lea/Lee (his Uncle ?) patented the 150a.
--------5-Peter
Ware IV (1720 King William Co. VA-c1787 Possibly in Montgomery Co., NC) m.
Susanna Randle (c1728-c1819/20) 5 Mar 1750 in Brunswick Co. VA. Susanna d/o John
Randle and Mary Frances Randolph: John died in Brunswick Co. VA in 1753 (will
dated 17 Nov 1752, proved 28 Aug 1753).
Notes:
Birth
year is estimated on the basis of the known date for Susannah. In "Marriage
Records of Brunswick, Va., 1730-1852 by A. B. Fothergill, 1953, Susannah Randle
is shown to have married a Ware, given name not specified. Later documents prove
this to be Peter Ware. Peter Ware is named in various legal documents in
Brunswick Co., until the sale 28/10/1771, whereby he and Susannah sell to John
Atkins, of Northampton, N.C., the property she received from her father (Deed
book 10, pg. 244-246) By 03/01/1780, Peter Ware is in Anson Co., N.C. On that
date he sells to Geo. Brewer of Halifax Co. 100 acres on Beaver Pond in
Northampton Co., N. C. for 1400 pounds, witnessed by Roland Ware and others. In
1782 tax records for Montgomery Co., N.C. includes a Peter Ware with 150 acres,
with Roland Ware (unmarried) and a Thomas Ware, other children are listed along
with 3 cousins. Peter Ware is noted in District 4, Montgomery Co. in 1787. This
is the last record found that documents Peter Ware's presence.
Notes
for Susannah Randle:
Susannah
death is noted in the William Morgan Family Bible. "She died in 98th or
99th year of her life.” This
statement is probably in error; since it would indicate a birth year of 1720,
while information from other sources have her born about 1728. Her parentage is
established by a gift of love from John Randle to his daughter, Susannah Ware,
of the plantation on which she lived with the 163 acres adjoining (Brunswick
Co., Va. Deed Book 4, pg. 125). On Oct. 28, 1771 this same land is sold by Peter
Ware and Susannah, his wife (Brunswick Co., Va., Deed Book 10, pg. 244).

Liberty Cemetery in Athens, TN) m. Temperance White (c1772-c1845) in Mecklenberg
Co., NC before 1800.
Notes
for ROLAND B. WARE: He probably migrated to Northampton Co., N. C. by 1774 with
Peter Ware. In 1778 he entered the service and fought in the Revolutionary War.
He lived to be 104 years. "While a resident of Montgomery Co., NC, he
enlisted in 1778 and served at various times until the close of the Revolution,
amounting to about 12 months in all, as private with the North Carolina Troops
under Capt. Ramles, and Buckner Kimbrell, Colonels Harris and Childs; he was in
skirmishes with the British and the Tories on the east side of the Peedee River.
He was allowed pension on his application executed July 1,1844, at which time he
was a resident of Warren County, Tennessee. Roland appears in the 1820 census
for Warren County, Tennessee. In 1857 he was living in McMinn County, Tennessee,
and he died June 15, 1864. From a letter signed by Winfield Scott dated March
10, 1926 military: He served 12
months as a guard to guard the legislator of North Carolina "to keep off
the Tories and British.” He said
he entered active service in Northhampton, N.C. being drafted for 3 months, then
marched on to Halifax in NC (not VA) and from there volunteered in the horse
company of Calvary, then called the light horse company. He then was in
Montgomery Co., N.C. and went to Drowning Creek. Residence: His pension papers
indicate he lived in Warren Co., TN before McMinn Co. and there are Warren Co.
records accompanying. He is buried at Liberty Cemetery that is located about 8
miles south of Athens, TN. There are 114 unmarked graves.
Notes
for Temperance White:
Who
was Temperance? No one seems to know. Temperance was born c1772 and died c1845.
Burial was at Smyma Cemetery at Smymnna, TN. A stone reportedly marks the grave
and reads "Wife of Roland Ware". Roland became ill shortly after
Temperance died; he was 84 at the time. He went to live the remainder of his
life with his son, Allen, in Athens, TN. He died at age 103.

Martin and Catherine "Katie" Myers (c1814-) in 1852. Wiley, Letty, and
daughter Sarah were enumerated in Warren Co. TN on the 1880 census. Letty was
previously married to John Luck Hays and then to David Argo and had a daughter
named Catharine Argo.
Note
by Len Ware: Wiley's son, Absalom Ware, was arrested as a rebel and sentenced to
be executed for desertion during the Civil War and his brother Roland was killed
at the battle of Perryville and his two half brothers, Samuel and John, were
killed at the battle of Peach Orchard near Atlanta, GA. This fact might explain
the hard feelings between Absalom and the rest of the Ware relatives in
Tennessee. This is probably why Horace Ware forbade any mention of Absalom's
name. Well, look at it this way, if he had been executed many of us wouldn't be
here today!

Note
on Ollie Viola Pearson by Len Ware: Ollie Viola Pearson was the daughter of
George Pearson and Rainey Alice Morris. She was a devout member of the Church of
Christ. Consequently, her husband and most of her children were baptized into
the church and many of their children worship in the Church of Christ to this
day. I was only 2 years old when she died but her legacy of love and faith in
God has influenced my life through the people that she touched and likewise all

husband was overseas she taught at Milligan Ridge School located south of
Manila. At the age of 52 she received a BSE in Education from Arkansas State
University in Jonesboro, AR. After her husband died in 1981 she retired.
Auddie
Byrl Ware fought in France, Germany and Belgium during WWII. He was wounded in
Belgium on January 4, 1945. He achieved the rank of Corporal. Medals received
for his service include the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Two
Bronze Battle Stars, a Gold Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the
Good Conduct Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge on February 21, 1946. He
was a patient at Lawson General Army Hospital in Atlanta, GA at that time.
Auddie
was a member of the American Legion, Herman Davis Post #197, located in Manila,
AR. Before moving to the Blackwater Community south of Manila in 1962, the
family lived in the old Granny Davis house located near the Herman Davis State
Park and Byrl was the caretaker of the park for many years. He and his wife,
Polly, were advocates for veteran's widows and their children. They helped many
families of veterans over the years that they served in this role.
When
Byrl and Polly lived in the Mt. Pisgah Community located south of Jonesboro, AR,
Byrl helped to build the County Line Church of Christ. The block building he
helped build still stands and is used as the church fellowship hall. A new
auditorium has been added to the original building. All of the water that was
used to make the cement came from a spring located behind Byrl and Polly's
house. The water was carried in buckets and jugs from the spring through their
house and loaded onto Byrl's old blue Dodge pickup truck; then, it was hauled to
the building site.
Byrl
was also a member of the Masons having been inducted into the Nettleton Masonic
Lodge in Jonesboro, AR.

Note
on George Gordon Ware’s death by Len Ware:
George
Gordon Ware was first reported missing by his uncle, Virgil Pearson, on March 7,
1964. Gordon’s brother, Auddie
Byrl Ware, never gave up searching for him for over nine months. Floodwaters on
Hatchecoon Island located near Rivervale, AR where Gordon lived hindered the
search. Gordon’s skeletal remains
were found in Dec of 1964. Byrl had
him buried next to his mother, Ollie Ware, at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jonesboro, AR.
When the remains were found the Sheriff told Byrl Ware that they would
proceed with criminal proceedings and investigate Gordon’s obvious murder
further if that was what he wanted. Byrl
replied, “No Sir, that’s not what
I want. All I ever wanted to do was
to find my brother and to give him a proper burial.
I felt I owed that much to my mother.”
He added this comment, “I believe who ever did this will create their
own prison in their mind and will suffer more from that than from being locked
up.”

Notes
on Henry Ware by Mary Ware:
Henry
was stationed at Camp Chaffee, AR when they were married. He had previously been
stationed at Buckley Field in Denver, CO. While
stationed there, he became ill with rheumatic fever that resulted in an enlarged
heart. He spent seven months in the
Fort Logan Hospital. After being
dismissed from the hospital he was told that he would be discharged and was sent
to Fort Smith, AR. However, he was
declared as essential to serve in the Army Military Police until his discharge
on March 26, 1945. One of the
medals that he received was the Good Conduct Medal.
Notes
on Mary Caery Ware by Len Ware:
Mary
Caery was the daughter of Monroe Caery. Her
mother died when Mary was very young. She
is reportedly buried in the Hornersrville, MO cemetery but no grave marker has
ever been located. Mary Caery and Pauline Ware became acquainted with each other
as young girls. They became best
friends and later ended up married to brothers.
Mary Ware has a brother, James Caery.
Since she never had a sister of her own, she claims Pauline as her sister
and Pauline feels the same way towards her.
In 1941 Mary’s uncle, Walter Caery, built the house in the Blackwater
Community next to the Floodway Levee that Auddie Byrl Ware and Pauline bought in
1962.

2) Vada Shaver (Buried at Yuma, AZ) at Lake City, AR.
Notes
on Homer Ware by Len Ware:
Gladys
Peters was the daughter of a medical doctor and was used to having money and
fine things. Homer Ware was unable
to provide her with the lifestyle that she was accustomed to living. They came
to Arkansas and lived briefly with Roscoe and Ollie Ware and other relatives.
Homer tried to please her but she was too much of a lady for farm life so
she took their three children back to Knoxville, TN and told Homer that she was
going to stay there. After several
years alone and no contact with Gladys, Homer married Vadie Shaver.
Homer was never divorced from Gladys Peters so he moved his family to
Yuma, AZ to live. He died there
circa 1961 and Vadie died c 1998. Both
are buried in Yuma, AZ.
Shortly
after Homer Ware’s death his son, Bobby Dan Ware, came to visit Monette
looking for his father. Byrl Ware
explained to him that he was deceased but did not reveal where he and Vadie were
living at that time. Byrl gave him
some money and sent him on his way. Neither
he, nor his two sisters have ever contacted the family again.

Notes
on Mary Lewis and W. D. Ware by Len Ware:
When
Horace Ware died in 1921 Mary and Bill were only 11 and 13.
Relatives in Monette were going to send them on the “Orphan Train” to
either live in an orphanage or to be adopted.
When Henry Roscoe Ware, Sr., their half brother, heard what the relatives
intended to do he raced his team from Lake City, AR to Monette, AR.
He arrived just in time to ask Bill and Mary to live with him and his
wife, Ollie. Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill Ware were considered so much like children
of Roscoe and Ollie that when Auddie Byrl Ware died in 1981 it was his specific
request to list them as immediate survivors in his obituary.
We listed them along with his brothers and sisters.
Uncle
Bill pretty much raised himself. As
a young man he used to “ride the rails”. On one occasion he was hopping a
train and a railroad employee hit him in the forehead with something probably
like a tire iron. As a result, he
had a permanent crease in his forehead. He
was lucky to survive. I grew up
hearing this story but his daughter did not know about it until the day of her
father’s funeral when Bill’s cousin, G. F. Stewart, relayed it to her.
Oral
family history tells of an amusing incident involving Uncle Bill Ware and Byrl
when they were growing up together. They were especially close.
They stumbled upon some moonshiners in the woods. The men were afraid
that the boys might reveal the location of their still so they were going to
kill them and dump their bodies into the river to look as though they had
drowned. Before any harm could come
to them Virgil Pearson, brother of Ollie Viola Ware, walked upon the scene and
told the men that they were his nephew and his brother-in-law’s half brother.
Virgil made the boys drink lots of whiskey until they passed out and then
took them home in his wagon. The
next morning was Sunday and Ollie found them passed out drunk on the porch.

married 2nd William Lake. She died testate in Oct 1835 in Williamsburg VA. In
the 1820 Williamsburg Census, Leigh was either in the 26-45 yr age bracket or 45

In the 1830 York County census Leigh is listed in the 50-60 yr age bracket,
while his wife Sarah is listed in the 40-50 yr age bracket. Leigh first appears
in James City Co. on the Williamsburg, VA personal property tax lists 1800-1827.
He acquired land there in 1804. Between 1828 and 1830 his residence is Norfolk

1842 Leigh's Wmbg land records say he is living in K&Q Co VA. In 1843
Leigh's Wmbg land is shown as estate of Leigh Ware. Probably (in his old age)

had purchased 3/4 acres of land near Shackelford's in 1840. From 1801-1807
Leigh worked as a tailor and later, in 1834-1838, he was issued a merchant's

Parish, York Co. VA.
2-John
Ware (c1638).
In 1675 he owned property adjacent Edward Cardingbrook, Nicholas I, and
Peter Ware Jr. Also, owned land next to Nicholas and Peter Ware in 1680 and 1682
New Kent Co. VA.
2-Nicholas
Ware I
(c1636 – Bet 1691 and 1704 K&Q Co. VA) m. Unknown. Nicholas patents 386a
in 1665 with John Garrett in New Kent Co. (his brother Peter's patent in 1675
shows this land was adjacent Col. William Claiborne, Edward Cardingbrook and
John Ware). According to his son Edward's 1722 patent, Nicholas I received a
total of 795a from Henry Madison. Nicholas, received 415a in 1680, and an
additional 380a soon after. The 380a belonged to Henry's father, John Madison,
Sr., (b. c1625) of Queen's Creek, York Co., who was living adj. Col.
William Taylor. John patented 1030 acres in New Kent Co. in 1664 with John Pigg,
each receiving 515a, After selling his father’s land in 1675, Peter Ware, Jr.,
who was then living in Queen's Creek, York Co., purchased land next to his
brother, in New Kent Co., VA.
--3-Nicholas
Ware II
(c1658->1713 K&Q Co. VA)-A 1713 patent identifies his son as Nicholas
Ware, “Jr.” (III) of Stratton Major Parish, indicating Nicholas II, was
still living in 1713. He was charged with 718 acres in 1704 K&Q Quit Rent
Rolls.
-----4-Nicholas
Ware III (c1680
New Kent Co.-1744 Caroline Co.) - a 1713 Essex Co. (later Caroline Co.) patent
identified him as "Nicholas Ware, Jr." of Stratton Major Parish, King
& Queen Co. (previously New Kent Co.), this 1713 patent was from Richard
Long for 5 shillings, (the 5 shillings denotes a "token" sum,
suggesting this may have been his father-in-law a
close relative. This land was adjacent
William Harrison, Samuel Elliott, John Buckner and John Long. A 1734
Caroline Co. court ordered him to assist with building a new
road. He was to have Gabriel Long's (son of Richard who m. Margaret
Harrison), John Holloway's, Nicholas Ware, Jr.'s and John Garrett's people
assist, (John Garrett was later the father-in-law of two of Nicholas
Ware, IV's sons). This places the birth year of the elder Nicholas,
before 1693 and the younger Nicholas before 1713, but more likely 1680 and 1700,
based on generations before and after. In 1727 John Buckner of Essex
Co. sold him 310a near Ware's bridge, adjacent Golden Vale Swamp, John Holloway
and Persimmon Branch. In 1728 he was granted 1000 acres in the fork of the
Rappadan (Rapidan) River in St. George's Parish, Spotsylvania Co., VA; he sold
500 acres in 1733, and the remaining 500 acres in 1740 to Jeremiah
Rawlings. A land deed shows a Jeremiah Rawlings, deceased, lived adjacent
Nicholas Ware in New Kent Co. In 1741 Nicholas was appointed Constable in
Caroline Co., and that same year he and John Dillard proved the will of
William Harrison. In 1744 John Dillard was identified as the writer of the
will of Nicholas Ware, which mentions sons Edward and Nicholas.

and Richard Buckner, he was appointed to view the way John Garrett petitioned a

Notes:
The areas along the Savannah Riverfront known as Woodlawn and Meriwether were
settled by families chiefly from Maryland and Virginia. These families were
named Ware, Meriwether, McKie, Hammond, Crafton, Nixon, and Middleton.
(Middleton had 150 tracts of land between 1770 and 1820 with 1000 acres in each
tract, with each being located on a branch of the Saluda River.) These families
intermarried and did business together.
Notes:
Earliest transportation was largely by riverboat and ferries along the Savannah
River and became the main trade, travel and mail crossings to Augusta, Georgia.
(Reported in the Quill in the minutes of the May 1990 meeting of the Old
Edgefield District Chapter of the SC Genealogical Society.)

for Robert Ware, Jr.:
Robert
Ware Jr.'s year of birth has not been firmly established but researches
generally agree "about 1780" is likely. It is also likely that he was
born in the Edgefield District, South Carolina.

1739; Nicholas Ware appraised his Estate. In
1785, he gave consent for Sarah to marry, i.e., Sarah under 21 years old in
1785. Edward's son James referred to the spouse of Henry's daughter Frances as

Thomas Waugh. This appears to tie Edward and Henry together as brothers. Note:

------------------8-(Speculation
Only) Thomas Ware (c1763 Amherst Co. VA-26 Dec 1851 Nelson Co. VA) m. Mildred
“Milly” Brayandt (Bryant ?) Jopling (c1765->3 Mar 1854), widow of Holman
Jopling, on 8/15 Oct 1787 at Buckingham Co. VA; Security for the marriage was
provided by Randolph Jefferson. Thomas enlisted as a private in Capt. Leak's
Company in 1781 at Albemarle Co., VA under Colonels. Richardson & Lindsay;
they marched to York. On Sunday, the French took Pigeon Hill. Thomas was called
on to work in plain view of the enemy's breastworks for four days and nights.
While there the enemy kept up a brisk cannonading with little injury-only one
man was killed; four days later they were compelled to surrender. The initial
terms of surrender were rejected by General George Washington, but after much
negotiation were finally accepted. The
army put down their arms, and the next day, along with other militia troops were
marched to Nolan’s ferry on the Potomac River. There, they were delivered to
Maryland troops. Thomas Ware served a total of eight months of service.
Thomas’ widow filed for a pension on 3 Jul 1853 in Buckingham Co. VA. Her
application was confirmed by James Lyon of Nelson Co. VA on 3 Mar 1854 when he
testified, “he went to school with some of her children to Mr. Holman Jopling.”
Milly Ware’s pension claim was allowed.
