Broad-tailed Hummingbird

Immature male

Lafayette, LA    12/6/03

Paul Conover's garden

The perched photo was taken on November 26th, a few days after his arrival. The partial gorget was rather striking. Some of the green feathers of an adult are also seen among the buffy wash on the breast.

A picture was also taken at the feeder on 11/26/03, and shows the primary molt with P5 about 50%.

He was banded on 12/6/03, along with 5 other hummers in Paul's very productive garden. The following pictures and notes are from that day. Secs: No fat, weight 3.2g, exp culmen 17.30, grooves 30% faint, wing 47.05mm, tail 30mm.

Throat, showing the right side using the flash of the camera.

Throat, showing left side using natural light.

Wing, showing the stage of molt at banding.

The tail is typical of an immature male.

Side shot showing the green feathers replacing the buffy wash.
