Broad-billed
Hummingbird
Gueydan, LA Home of Elizabeth Guidry
Pictures and info from banding, 11/15/04.
This male Broad-billed appears to be an adult.
The bill lacked corrugations, The exposed culmen
measured 21.83mm.
The tail recently lost the middle 4 rectrices leaving only R3-5 on each side
measuring 30mm. The tail was complete 2 days earlier, but was loose in
appearance. Rectrices 1&2 are typically the first lost in tail molt by some
hummingbirds.
The wing was also in molt. Primaries 1-6 were fresh, and P7 was about 40%. Wing
cord 50.57mm. This is interesting in comparison to the
feeder photo from 3 days earlier when P7 was only an emerging pin.
His gorget was nearly complete except for a few gaps. His breast and belly also
had a few gaps with some pin feathers evident. He did not seem in heavy body
molt however, and few feathers came off in handling. He seemed in fine health
with a weight of 3.79grams.
