WILLIAM  F. MARTIN
AN ARTIST OF "CREATIVE REALISM"

Color has always been a part of my life, and expressing it creatively is my main interest.  I have spent over 35 years in the lithographic profession as a color separation specialist, reproducing subjects for both commercial and fine art lithographic printing.  I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Stout State College, in Menomonie, Wisconsin, where I prepared for a teaching career in the graphic arts. As an instructor, I have taught many graphic arts subjects.  One of my favorite subjects was a course in advanced color theory, which I taught for four semesters at Arizona State University, in Tempe, Arizona.  In this course I stressed the scientific approach to successful reproduction of color originals for the four-color lithographic printing process.

Inspired by the original art with which I worked, and the close association I developed with many fine artists, I began my work in oils with a rare enthusiasm.  I inherited a small easel and a box of oil paints from my dad, which ignited my interest, and spurred my ambition toward creative art, using
oils as my medium.  Recently I have begun to broaden my interest in different mediums and have begun to explore the use of watercolors.  I enjoy this medium because of the luminous effect I am capable of achieving and for the way it lends itself to my type of art. I have shown paintings in several galleries, including Magyar Studio in Tucson, Arizona, Four Winds Gallery in Prescott, Arizona, and A Southwest Turn Gallery in Cave Creek, Arizona.  My art has been juried into the Glendale Fine Arts Competition several years, with several sales.  I have also received first and second place awards for two of my oils in other valley art shows. My subjects are many and varied, ranging from Southwest landscapes to animal portraits and still life;  all have a touch of vivacity and reality which is unique.  I use the time-honored approach of many of the old masters, in both oil painting and watercolor painting.  This involves painting in layers to make use of the luminance of the base underpainting partially  reflecting through the final layers.  This also provides a degree of archival permanence to the art, meaning that it will last for many generations.  I invite you to observe my work on this website in an atmosphere of "Creative Realism."
