Memo Garcia Anaheim Hills CA | | Wow, what a great site. I remember what a treat it was to go to the "San Diego International Sports Arena" to catch a Gulls game. This site brought back some wonderful childhood memories... for a time in the late '60s early '70s San Diego had it all "sports wise." The Chargers, Padres, Rockets and Gulls! But the lovable Gulls took hold of the town. Thanx for a walk down memory lane.

Bruce C. Mc Leod Santa Barbara CA | | I was a kid in Colorado back in the 1970's and enjoyed many WHL games involving the Denver Spurs and the San Diego Gulls. Unfortunatley, the Gulls used to kick the Spurs butts most of the time. I miss the 1970's but I don't miss the Spurs getting their butts kicked.

Steve Mojave CA | | I have many treasured memories of San Diego Gulls hockey. Although I was, and still am, a Los Angeles Kings fan, I love hockey. It was the distinctive play calling of Ron Oakes that drew to the Gulls. I recall my sister and I taking the bus from North Hollywood, Ca., to the Sports Arena to catch the Gulls in action. After I got my driver's license, I'd drive to San Diego in my '64 Pontiac Bonneville a few times during the season.
I loved WHL action. I remember the wire mesh; a speedy Willie O'Ree; an acrobatic Jack McCartin; Bob Courcy and Sandy Fitzpatrick.
Guyle Fielder, Art Jones, Bill Saunders, King Kong Korab and the equally large Rick Foley still live in my memory.
I still have several game programs. Teams I saw in action against the Gulls: Phoenix Roadrunners, Portland Buckaroos; Denver Spurs; and SLC Golden Eagles.
Long live my San Diego Gull memories circa 1969-1974.

John and Louise O'Hara Chino Hills CA | | Miss the Gulls but have had the occasion to meet or hear from some of them over the years since the team was disbanded. Several still live in San Diego. Lucky Guys!

Bud MacLeod Mission BC | | I am trying to find current info on Les Hunt. We used to know each other when we were 10/11 years of age in Fort William (now Thunderbay) Ontario.

John Holbrooke Kensington MD | | The Gulls changed my life. I attended my first Gull game in December 1966. It was the best thing that I've ever seen. Because of the Gulls, I fell in love with hockey and also the Montreal Canadiens. Because of the Canadiens, I fell in love with Montreal and I learned to speak French. On a trip to Montreal, I met my wife. Speaking French also helped me to forge a career with Customs that has taken me around the world. I still love hockey. I am 51. I coach, play and referee. The best thing is that I am a hockey Dad, and my son just made the travel team.

Del Jakabosky Olathe KS | | I loved watching Willie O'Ree fly down the ice. I remember listening to Ron Oakes do the play-by-play on the radio. Many of us in the neighborhood went downtown to get fiberglass-fused hockey sticks at a downtown sporting goods store because it was the only place in the 60's that had them. Then we would play on the street or in the gym. I loved the Gulls orange and blue uni's.

James New York NY | | Gotta love the Gulls!

Yvonne (Nicholson) Montgomery Victoria BC | | Widow of Al Nicholson who played with the Gulls.

Jukka Suutari Helsinki, Finland | | This website is simply awesome!

Sandy Walter Lemon Grove CA | | What a fantastic website! It has brought back so many great memories. I can remember my whole family going to ALL of the home games (all 10 of us). And with coupons from Coke, I think it only cost us 50 cents to get in.
After I saw my first game in November, 1966, which we lost to Portland 6-1, Bobby Campoux was playing in goal, I remember going home and telling my folks that I may never see another football game as long as I live (we were also big Charger fans.) So for 8 years we supported the Gulls win or lose and loved every minute of it. I traveled to many out of town games in Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, and Phoenix and Ron Oakes always made mention of the fact that I was there. Saved me a phone call to my folks to let them know I had arrived safely. We became friends with several of the players and had many great get-togethers at our house.
Just had a visit from Al Nicholson's widow and daughter last month. And John MacMillan's oldest son was married here in San Diego in 2003, so have been able to keep in touch and catch up with some of our old friends from the club.

Steve Seattle WA | | I am from Seattle and loved the Totems. They had a fierce fight against the Spurs: fans threw beer at them in the arena in Seattle. The Totems scored 3 goals in a minute to win 4-3. Does anybody know where I can get more info?

Ron Crowe San Diego CA | | All the games were great but the best memory I have is my Dad and I spending the time together... I wish he was still here so he could see this web site and enjoy it too. Come to think of it he probably is. The gang in Loge 6B Row 1 was always great. Long live our fond memories.

Tom Gregg Winter Haven FL | | I just had a memory rush. I lived in San Diego in the early Seventies and attended every game they played. Thanks for the memories and for your hard work....... Go Gulls!.

K.A. Park City UT | | My fondest memories of going to Gulls games are those of drinking pitchers of coors draft and wading ankle-deep in peanut shells at "That Place Across the Street From the Sports Arena".

Morey Holzman Escondido CA | | As a hockey author ("Deceptions and Doublecross") and historian, I must commend you on your fine work. As a San Diegan, I'm glad to see a part of hockey's heritage retained and maintained.

Jim Swanson Temecula CA | | Just great to find your site! I was, along with my high school buddies fans of the Gulls from 66-67 'til the bitter end. Get in touch with me, I still have programs from back then, my Dad saved everything, I even have the small schedules!! I looked at your "help me" department and I can get almost all of your answers!! Hell, I even remember the night of the Bruce Cowick boarding penalty which resulted in following games with the chant of "Cow-Wick, Cow-Wick" and I was also there for the woman who used to go crazy grabbing the "chicken wire" plexiglass, she sat in the first row of the greys. Get in Touch!!!

Bob Kline Granbury TX | | I can recall alot of the games as vividly as if they happened yesterday.
I remember they practiced at the old Mission Valley Shopping center at the Bon Vivant Shopping rink.
I remember hating like hell Terry Foley from, I think, Seattle, skating into a pile up with his skates up. And the night Connie Madigan punched out the official (Malcom Ashford).
I am back quite a few years at the mention of names like Warren Hynes, Freddy Hilts, Bobby Champoux, Al Nicholson, Willie O'Ree, Gerry Odrowski, Len Ronson and the rest.
Thanks guys !!!

Bart Lawrence Surrey BC | | Just wondering if you have anything else on Larry McNabb (he's my grandpa).

Peter Kerry Nordin BC | | I just wanted to let former fans and players 72/73 know that former defenceman #4 Keith Nordin has passed away suddenly of a brain aneurysm on Monday October 25th, 2004. Keith played only 19 games for the Gulls until he was injured and was forced to play with his injury which resulted in shortening his very promising professional career. Growing up Keith was my cousin as well as my hero. He was a good role model.
See you in heaven #4!

Paula Steele Lancaster CA | | My greatest memory of the original Gulls was Alain "Boom Boom" Caron taking up the puck behind his own net and proceeding to skate through the entire Seattle Totem team to score an unassisted goal while falling to the ice!! Simply breathtaking!!! I was also at the game where Cornelius "Connie" Madigan blindsided referee Andy Van Hellemond from behind with his stick... What a worm...

Erich Lenz San Diego CA | | What an AWESOME site. I am doing some historical research on hockey here in San Diego, and this site is by far one of the best, and most informative sites I have seen on any past or present hockey club. Phenomenal work!

Donna Walters El Cajon CA | | What wonderful memories seeing your website brought back for those of us who had the privilege of seeing the Gulls' (Western Hockey League) home games played at the San Diego Sports Arena so many years ago. Those were quite exciting years for hockey fans, when magic and electricity filled the air in and around the Sports Arena!

GP OR | | I basically grew up with the old San Diego Gulls. Perusing this web site sure has brought back a lot of memories. Going with friends to the old San Diego Sports Arena. Watching the Gulls blast the Buckaroos and the Canucks!! Watching the incredible Vladislav Tretiak tend goal for the Central Red Army team; what a goaltender. And recalling some of the great players that came out of that era; Willie O'Ree, Dunc McCallum, Jack McCartan. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, when life was simpler.

Leo Regehr Edmonton AB | | I worked with John MacMillan while was still with the Toronto Maple Leafs. I am trying to track him down. Can anyone help me?

Ron Fry Campbell CA | | After all these years of watching hockey, the single most exciting player (and play) still remains Willie O'Ree on a breakaway. The place would go dead, everyone would hold their collective breath, Willie would deke the goalie and, of course, Ron Oakes would go nutso on the call. I remember a game in which the Portland goalie, might've been Edwards, came out 30 feet to try to tackle Willie, Willie tucked the puck around him, met up with it again and had a wide-open net to dink it into. To this day, NO PLAY matches the excitement for me of an O'Ree breakaway (any hit by Jim Cardiff comes in second.) I would still rather watch a Gulls' game than any NHL game.

Sandy White San Pedro CA | | I am the widow of Dick White (and the original Sandy the Gull.) I drove the office car to my substitute teaching jobs all over San Diego so that people would become familiar with the Gulls. My husband and I were married on June 25, 1966 and immediately returned to San Diego that evening as the roof to the Sports Arena was to be placed by heliocopter on Monday morning. My husband, Dick White, was the public relations director, among many titles he possessed while there. Because we had no honeymoon, Mr. Brietbart sent me on the Christmas road trip with the team. What an experience! Many of the players, including Willie O'Ree, lived at our home which was on Leland Street right above the Arena. So many memories. I wish Dick had known of your website. He had a million great stories to tell about training camp, pinochle games among the players at out house, and road trips.
Thank you for putting this site together,
Sandy "the Gull" White.

Susan Rademacher Chicago IL | | My father was the PR director for the Rockets and the Gulls from 1966-1969. His name was Dick White and he died recently. Thank you for such a wonderful website.

Kelly Van de Sype Weyburn SK | | Great site! I am doing a history for the Weyburn Red Wings of the old WHL/SJHL. Could I get a larger picture of Dwight Carruthers? The full body media shot? [Kelly, I'll look and see if I have a full media shot and pass it on... Alex]

Bo Courtney San Diego CA | | Very cool site. I really liked the memorabilia section. I've picked up some of that stuff over the years at thirft shops. (Booster Club pin, pennant, and a puck.) Cool stuff. Keep up the good work and thank you for an awesome site...

Brad Beller Phoenix AZ | | Great website! I am an old WHL Roadrunner fan. Former 'Runners Howie Young, Jim Boyd and Gary Simmons were friends with my father. We had season tickets on the glass (well, in that day, it was metal fencing). Willie O'Ree you rock!

Kevin Pozzo New Orleans LA | | Just wanted to say it was neat to see my father's (Gary Pozzo) team picture. Its amazing the popularity of the team still to this day. He still talks about his time playing there and still keeps in touch with some of the players. He has been a firefighter in Calgary for the past 25 years, and has coached hockey there also.

Gregg R. Burns Las Vegas NV | | Great site. Brings back many memories. The Gulls were a huge influence on my life. I remember when I was a kid going to the games with all of my hockey buddies. Thanks again.

Jim Dawson San Diego CA | | Thanks for the memories. I lived in a hockey neighborhood in Clairemont. Gordy Sinclair, Fred Hilts and Warren Hynes lived in our neighborhood and we went to school with their kids. Gordy and Johnny MacMillan were my heroes and I learned how to play hockey at their school down at the old Mission Valley outdoor ice rink. Max McNab's son Peter was my first coach and I remember seeing Max at some of our games. The first time he called me "Jimmy" I thought I was big stuff.
But my favorite memory was the night we played between the first and second period of a Gulls game. When the Gulls came off the ice they all gave us whack on the shin guards with their sticks as they walked to the dressing room. It was one of the great moments in my life that I will never forget.
The Gulls were a huge part of our community in Clairemont. We got to watch their games for a buck and we played with their kids in our neighborhood. It doesn't get any better than that. I have never enjoyed the game of hockey more than I did in those days with those great men. Thanks again!

Tom Bell San Diego CA | | You mentioned Mary Anne Escamilla will always remember her trademark roll to the high C on the National Anthem. But, also, a most important, and always composed part of the Gulls scene the organist, Louis Parsley. I remember as a kid asking Louis about the "Go Gulls Go" song he played after every goal the Gulls scored. He gave me a copy of the music score I still have it as a prized treasure of those wonderful days, never missing a Gull game.
General Admission was a buck, later going to a whole buck and a quarter, and if you could get on line at the North Entrance early enough (we always did) you could get the first row in Section 4A. Better seats than what you can get today in any NHL arena for 100 times that price.
The "ONE" memory for me will always be Gary Edwards' spectacular performance in goal before he made it to the NHL. We were used to great goaltending with McCartan and Champoux. But the resounding standing ovation for Gary Edwards that night will never leave me.
You've revived a great many memories. I look forward to reading the rest of your Guest Book and sharing these great times. Thank you for this.

Tom Gregg Winter Haven FL | | I lived in San Diego and attended San Diego State. I never missed a home game while the Gulls werw in town. It is good to see all these wonderful memories.

Bernie MacNeil Kingston ON | | This is an excellent site. I had the good fortune of being traded to the San Diego Gulls and met some tremendous people and played with some great players, and for that I am thankful. Brings back great memories!!

John Kamrar Bellingham WA | | You have a great website. I am a Vancouver Canucks' fan and I attended the 1970 playoffs and saw my Canucks take four games from the Gulls, who won two, as the Canucks went on thereafter to beat Portland in five. Vancouver never had an easy time with San Diego during that season. My fondest memory that entire season is Duke Harris' playoff slapshot over the left shoulder of Jack McCartan and into the net... a shot Duke took when everyone in the building thought he was going to pass to Brad Selwood, who had a clear breakaway on the other side. It was our pleasure in 1995 to attend a Gulls game in San Diego vs. the Phoenix Roadrunners, and I am sad that now both teams are gone. But the memory of the Western Hockey League and its characters lives on... Willie O'Ree and Lenny Ronson will never be replaced by any of the new talent, in my mind.

Bryan Main San Diego CA | | My first Gulls game was November, 1966. I was 10 years old and from that night on, I was hooked on hockey. I played amateur hockey in San Diego and later on at Northern Arizona University. I am currently the Public Address Announcer for the San Diego Gulls of the WCHL / ECHL.

Kevin Best Pittsburgh PA | | Hello, this web site is great. I knew about the San Diego Gulls since the '60s. They were a good team. Willie O'Ree was my favorite player. He was great. Tony McKegney was another great player who played for the IHL Gulls. I'm very proud to say I know both of these guys. They are great people. I'm almost 49 years old and I still play hockey. It's a great game and I love it. Thanks.

Craig Dahlberg San Diego CA | | Great memories coming back. Sitting behind the goal with the Pejsa family. The rubber chicken. Courcy, Goyer and Ronson. Booing the bad guys. Besides "Mad Dog" I remember one other guy who really caused a stir. My memory is fading but the Denver Spurs and the name Schultz comes to mind... No, I remember who the Bad Boy of the Spurs was now... Bob Gassoff. I still remember his double "flip-off" as he skated off the ice.
B000000000000000000!

Louis Chirillo Vancouver BC | | Hey Alex, Louis here. Just checking out your website. I must say you've raised the bar. Your site rocks!

Nick Rougas Clearwater FL | | Good to see the GULLS back.... They are the reason I still enjoy ice hockey... THANKS GULLS !!!!!

Dean Tacoma WA | | WOW! Good memories. My brother Brent and his best friend Ron took me to my first hockey (Gull) game when I was 16. I've been a hockey fan ever since.
My favorite Gull player of all time: #5 Al LeBrun.

Tim Seattle WA | | Fabulous site! I'm a lifelong fan of Bob Courcy! Always interested in whatever happened to him. I'm also looking for team photos of the WHL Canuck's uniforms, photos of WHL teams and players in general. Great site! Too hard to pick my favorite Gulls' goalie I love 'em all!

Bob Davidoski Philadelphia PA | | Awesome site! Love the uniforms and player photos. I've been a Gulls fan since the early 70's when Kindrachuk and Cowick joined Philadelphia Flyers and have their names on the Stanley Cup as part of 1973-74 Stanley Cup Champs. I see many players I remember playing in WHA, AHL, & NAHL of the 70's, when Blazers and later the Firebirds played at Civic Center in Philly. Thanks!!

Ron Fry Campbell CA | | Hilts, Cardiff, Hynes, Champoux, Gustafson: my five favorite WHL Gulls.

John Chapman Chandler AZ | | Fabulous site! Brings back vivid memories of the intense Gulls-Roadrunners rivalry. KPHO TV in Phoenix used to televise all the Phoenix games against the Gulls in San Diego, so I remember the "Mad House on Mission Bay" as Phoenix announcer Al McCoy (current Suns announcer) used to refer to the Sports Arena, and the big crowds that the Gulls always drew. I was in the 6th grade when the Roadrunners won their first Patrick Cup and saw Phoenix beat the Gulls in game five of the semis, 5-0. I was hoarse for days after that game from cheering for Howie Young, Andre Hinse and all the other 'Runners and from screaming at Rick Foley and George Swarbrick. For my money, there was no better hockey match-up than a Saturday night Gulls-'Runners game before 11,000 fans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Anyway, thanks for bringing back all those memories from the halcyon days of the old WHL.

Jim Czesnakowski Pittsburgh PA | | Looking for anything with Les Binkley: photos, programs, team picture. I am a good friend of his and we are doing a room in the new Pens Hall Of Fame, and would like original items with Les.

Brad Beller Phoenix AZ | | Great website! From an old WHL Roadrunners fan.

Rob Baraszu Detroit MI | | The best old WHL site of them all! Great job. You should list the site with the Hockey Research Association so more people can enjoy it. [Thanks, Rob! I'm applying for membership in the HRA upon your suggestion. Alex.]

Carin Adams Caves Durham NC | | Thanks so much for all the hard work that went into this wonderful site! I'm a native of Escondido, born in '67, and have always had fond, although vague memories of the Gulls games with my family, my dad being perhaps the only hockey fan in Escondido at the time. We've recently moved to the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina (a scary prospect for hockey fans.) As hockey has caught on here in "Mayberry" I'm frequently asked how a CA native became such a hockey fan, and the question always takes me back to the days of the WHL Gulls. Thank you so much for the chance to look back, and to jog my memory, as well as givng stats that I was completely unaware of as a 0-7 year old.

Jon L Los Angeles CA | | Wish I had kept all the 120 or so programs I bought during those glory days to eBay I would go with them as memorabilia sales materials never thought the Gulls would disband (or the WHL either) but they did. Any word on where Ron Oakes has gone to or how to contact? [Jon, I've heard that Ron Oakes is still in the San Diego area but beyond that I haven't any information. Alex.]

Brad Long Island NY | | I loved the site. I am presently writing a book on the old California Golden Seals and have interviewed many former players and coaches of the club. Many players who played for the Gulls also played for the Seals. I was wondering if you had any idea where Bob Champoux might be these days. I have not been able to locate him. Thanks for the help and the look back. [Thanks, Brad! I don't have any information on Bob Champoux's whereabouts but I'll let you know if I do. Alex.]

Brian Banting Langley BC | | Great site. My uncle, George Swarbrick, played for the Gulls. When I came across this site I was thrilled.

Tom Trevelyan Mississauga ON, Canada | | Brings back wonderful memories. Thanks for your efforts.

Tommy Gomes San Diego (Tuna town) Point Loma CA | | What a great site, I remember watching every game at home. Those were the great days of hockey in San Diego. I have a great deal of stuff from the old days, Sandy Gull bobbleheads, pucks, programs etcetera. Do you still go to the games? Remember the crazy bunch in upper 8A? Oh yeah, the North Con, great for girl watching. Who could not remember Connie "Mad Dog", we hated that guy, or the speed of Willie coming across the red line? Yup, days gone bye for sure.

Steve Smithson Austin TX | | My parents used to take me to see the Gulls in the early 1970's. Wow, this site brings back a lot of memories. Thanks! When we lived in an apartment complex in La Mesa during 1970, one of the Gulls team members had an apartment above ours! Oh, I forget his name! Interesting! During that time there was some fan that would always throw a rubber chicken attached to a rope over the wire in order to taunt the visiting team. The ref would always yell at him! Seemed like this guy with the chicken was at every game we went to. What happened to that chicken? Sandy Gull was the best team mascot of all time! That new Gulls mascot looks a bit too mean.. Great Web site! Keep up the good work!

Reed Nessel San Diego CA | | Fabulous job... those were great days and I was excited to review your site and have the chance to relive some of them.

Dave Rodriguez North Park CA | | You echoed my sentiments! There's never been or will there be anything like WHL hockey for me. I was mesmerized by Sandy and Gulliver Gull leading the team onto the ice with the organ playing in the background. Listening to the Ron Oakes broadcasts on the radio was always a treat. At home I'd have a typewriter in front of me and after every goal I would type in the action old newsroom style. I'd have my scoring recap after the game just like the newspaper. The next day was usually spent playing backyard hockey with tennis balls, or crushed aluminum cans...
First Period
S.D. - O'Ree 1 (Ronson,Evans) 5:54.
[Thanks, Dave! I'd forgotten all about Gulliver Gull! I'll have to add him to the site somehow. Alex.]

Marc Wetherington San Diego CA | | Great site! I became a Gulls fan in 1967 at 10 years old and have been a fan ever since: thanks for keeping the memories alive!

Stewart Teaze San Diego CA | | I loved to hate Connie Madigan.
Couldn't BELIEVE my eyes when he showed up on TV (in black and white, or course!) playing for the St. Louis Blues. There was a break in play for an injury, and they kept showing him skating around and around. I didn't understand it at the time, but it was because he was a 40-year-old rookie!
I remember they drew 13,707 on my birthday, 2/17/69. That was the largest crowd ever for hockey in the Sports Arena. There were people sitting in the aisles... 'cause they used to allow standing room. The fire marshall put a stop to that, and the most the Mariners got for Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe was 13,039... and they had to ADD seats to get above 13,000!
Gotta wonder if we had beaten those blasted Buckaroos, and won a cup or two, would they have let the Gulls in the NHL? Oh well, it was fun anyway and Andre Lacroix and the WHA was probably more fun than the NHL would have been anyway... at least the Mariners won some playoffs!

Greg S Marquette MI | | Just browsing and came across this site. VERY NICE Excellent site. I also tried doing the same thing for my local hockey team from the 60's and 70's. I'm going to use some of your ideas for my own site if that is OK with you. [Thanks, Greg Feel free to borrow anything from the site that you like. Alex.]

C Kelley Portland OR | | I was introduced to the Gulls as a fifth grader when Ron Oakes' daughter Diane was in my class. Since my father was also a hockey fan, growing up in Maine, our whole family became regulars at the games. My love of hockey has been passed onto my son who found this delightful web site. Nice job.

shortboyjim San Diego CA | | Alex, thanks so much for bringing the WHL Gulls back to us. I never missed a game, and what a great group of guys they were. From Max McNab to Bruce Cowick, every game was exciting. I sure remember those days, students got in for 75 cents, and seats by the ice were $3.50.

John Story San Diego CA | | Thanks for the site! I was a young boy watching those Gulls games and have been a hockey fan ever since. I remember the tremendous and enthusiastic crowds at the games. It was magical. Think about it the Sports Arena would sell out! San Diego was a lot smaller city back then, too. Ken Broderick, Orest Kindrachuk, Willie O'Ree, Tex Evans, Jack McCartan there were some great hockey players in that day.

Dave Soutter Centerville UT | | Hey, fantastic! I remember the Gulls so well from their WHL days when they visited the Golden Eagles here in Salt Lake. And the great names... Willie O'Ree, Jack Evans, Al Nicholson, John MacMillan, Irv Spencer, Jack McCartan, Fred Hilts, Earl Heiskala, Mike Bloom, Gary Simmons, Max McNab. The Gulls always had good teams and when they visited Salt Lake they always gave the Golden Eagles a run for their money Great job on the site

Tim Fiero San Diego CA | | Great site that will get even better. There was something magical about that organization. They were very professional. Just think, over 25 years ago when the Portland Buckaroos or the Denver Spurs came to town, there would be 13,500 people in the Sports Arena for regular home games.

Bruce Bogers San Diego-Oceanside back then | | Boyoboy! What memories! Thanks so much.

Mark - Gulls Fan '66 San Diego CA | | What a great site! It brings back a lot of memories... Yes, the Gulls were very special back then even though they didn't come close to the success our current WCHL Gulls have achieved.

Dana Shima Orange County CA | | Great site. By the way, Harold Snepsts coached the 1993/94 IHL Gulls. [Thanks, Dana, I've added your contribution to the site. Alex.]

Rita San Diego CA | | Fantastic! What memories you have brought back Thanks.

Cynthia Curtis Chula Vista CA | | Thanks for the site, it is really informative and easy to navigate.

Steve Margerum Los Angeles CA | | Great site. Brings back a lot of memories. I'd forgotten what Sandy Gull looked like. Now there's a mascot to strike fear in the hearts of the opponent.

Craig Baumken Ottawa ON | | Great site. Thanks :-)

Chuck Eckels Escondido CA | | It's nice to see that someone else has a passion for the WHL Gulls of the 60's and 70's like I do. Great job Alex.

Doug Champiny Denver CO | | Nice site. Very professional. I'm humbled. Thanks for the mention. Will get my rear in gear and add a link from mine to yours. Always good to see new WHL sites popping out. Maybe you could do a little glimpse at the new incarnation of the Gulls in the WCHL. They just won the Taylor Cup. However, if the Gold Kings would have gotten by Idaho, the Gulls may not have been so lucky. Keep up the good work. Thanks again for the mention. [Doug, I've added the "Gulls > Birds Of A Feather" section which includes the WHCL Gulls. Alex.]

Alex Roel San Diego CA |
My favorite and most vivid memory among many was the Gulls' playoff game in 1970/71 against the Portland Buckaroos in which Connie Madigan and Rick Foley went berserk during a brawl with the Gulls. I recall that the chicken-wire "glass" didn't prevent at least one full beer from hitting Connie and it wasn't long thereafter he punched the WHL referee (I can't recall his name) in the face and decked him to the ice. Yikes! What a night! We were sitting in our regular seats at Loge 12 and all the action took place right in front of us...
