Narrative

On the aircraft -- scheduled to depart to Charlotte in about ten minutes. Got out of the house on time and parked the car at Crystal Mall. Got to the airport and had another exciting check in experience. Washington, DC is not a backpacking town -- the friendly folks at U. S. Airways were in rare form as we checked our backpacks. Between arguing amongst themselves and arguing with us, there wasn't time or motivation for real conversation. The prolonged period of low unemployment has not had a salutary effect on the service sector.

In the van, on our way to Ashford.

1524, 7/14/01 Saturday

At the Ranger Station in Longmire. Got our wilderness camping permit. No room at the National Park Inn, so we got a cross-country permit to camp in the vicinity of Longmire. Both of us got good sleep on the plane, and all of our stuff showed up just fine in Seattle. On the way to Longmire, the woman driving our shuttle bus stopped at Wal-Mart so we could get white gas and contact lens solution. The van ride was very pleasant, and reasonably fast.

The skies are partly cloudy -- the temperature is very nice.

This is the tag that we were given when we registered. It is wired to the back of a backpack while on the trail, and wired to the tent when in camp. I did not notice that the campsites were were given were different than what we'd asked for until we were on the trail a day or so. Everything turned out okay for us, but make sure you understand the differences!

In camp. Ranger Dan Vaughan was a great help in giving us a steer to a backcountry permit location near Longmire. There is no longer any camping at Longmire. The nearest site is Cougar Rock. That's in the wrong direction for us, so we first checked to see if there were rooms at the Inn (there weren't), then opted for the backcountry location near Longmire. The weather is spectacular. Our new tent looks like it will work great -- it certainly is light enough. There are a few mosquitos around, and we're pretty tired, so we turned in.

Lorraine: What a great day. Got up on time, got here w/all our stuff pretty close to on time. Lucked out with this campsite -- it's pretty fancy. Really sleepy. It's ~ 645 local time and we're hitting the bed. Hope to get an early start tomorrow.
