SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
Windows 98 Second Edition

When Microsoft released Windows 98 Second Edition, they made changes to the 4 courier fonts which made these fonts incompatible with the WinPrinter software. In addition, some changes were made to the method in which 7 other required files are extracted from the Windows CD, so the WinPrint installer cannot copy them, and the installation fails.

The workaround for this is to use the 4 font files from a first edition Windows 98 CD. These fonts will need to be manually copied from the older CD into the folder C:\Windows\Fonts, and this process must take place in DOS mode as Windows will not allow the existing fonts to be replaced while Windows is running. We also need to configure the other 7 files so that the WinPrint installation routine will find them where it expects them and successfully copy them to the hard drive. I created a batch file that will automate the font replacement process, and I have prepared the other 7 files so the installer will find them.

The installation steps are outlined below. If you have the Controller card set up correctly, the software installation and font replacement should only take a few minutes.

  1. Make sure you have set up the controller card correctly.
  2. If you haven't already done so, download the WinPrint drivers and the WinPrint fix for Windows 98SE from the links below.
  3. Double click the fix file WPFIXWSE.EXE to extract the files. The self extractor will create the folder C:\WPFIX during the extraction.
  4. Copy the driver file WP200.EXE into this same folder and double click to extract.
  5. Double click the Setup.exe file to begin the software installation.
  6. "Welcome to the LaserMaster WinPrint Setup." Click Next
  7. This next screen will be the Controller card setup, and the options should already be filled in and match what you set the jumpers for. Otherwise you will see an error about Setup not being able to detect your hardware configuration. In this case you will need to set the jumpers to a different configuration, one that's not being used by another device, and run Setup again. If you did not get an error, then the jumpers are set correctly and you are ready to proceed. Click Next.
  8. Here you will chose the folder to install into. The default folder of C:\Program Files\WinPrint should be fine. Click Next.
  9. After it copies a few files, you'll get an error (red X dialog box) when it tries to copy files from the Windows CD. It will simply say "Please insert the disk labeled Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM",and then click OK. Click OK to this and then click Browse. You should already have Driver20.cab listed twice in the left window. If not you will need to navigate to the WPFIX folder. Click OK and then click OK again to complete the installation.
  10. You are now prompted to reboot the computer, click No.
  11. Go back to the WPFIX folder and double click the file named FONTFIX. You'll be asked if you want to continue in MS-DOS mode. Click Yes.
  12. The batch file will now run, which replaces the 4 font files, and the computer will reboot into Windows. This may take a minute to update files before loading Windows.
After rebooting, you will need to print a test page to verify everything is working properly.
  1. Click Start - Settings - Printers.
  2. Right-click on the WinPrint icon and choose Properties.
  3. Click "Print Test Page".
  4. If the page prints successfully, you're all set. The printer will now print from any Windows application. If it does not print successfully, you'll have problems printing from nearly everything. This simple test is an important step in verifying proper installation.
