Lewis C. Tolles

Records leading to Lewis C. Tolles were "first" discovered during a July, 1997 search of the Civil War records at the National Archives. According to these records, he enrolled in Denver, CO, 14 Sep 1861, and was discharged 31 Jan 1865. On 20 May 1897, while on professional duty, he fell from a moving Street Car in Denver, breaking his femur and some bones in his neck. He died in a Soldier's home 13 years later. Names of his three children were given, and that is about all we knew until Alyce Jane Morow recently (2008) discovered records from ancestry.com (in "Little Compton Families").

Additional information about this illustrious ancestor included facts about his education (he attended Medical College, at Woodstock, VT., where he graduated and received the degree of Doctor of Medicine in June, 1854). During the remainder of the year, he practiced medicine in the town of Dartmouth, Mass. In the spring of 1855 he removed to Lawrence, Kan., where he practiced medicine for five years. He was one of the early settlers of that state and participated in the trouble with the border fuffians, and aided in making Kansas a free state. In 1860, he came to Colorado and again resumed the practice of his profession. In 1861, he was appointed surgeon of the 1st Colo. V., and served four years holding the office of Medical Director a portion of the time. He then returned to his home in Central City, and has since been engaged in the active practice of his profession.
