Henry Tolles[2] (I); b. About 1630[32], "Withersfield, CT" or Wales (ambiguity); bur. probably CT; Sp: Sarah; m. 1668[32], Saybrook, CT; Divorced: 1676; Ch: Henry. Notes: This is the first Henry Tolles in America as far as records show; he first settled in Wethersfield, CT, and then in Saybrook, CT[148]. Henry Tolles apparently came from Wales or England according to "family legend," passed on to several lines of the family tree. Before 1668 he moved from Wethersfield to Saybrook, CT. He divorced his first wife, Sarah, in 1676. He apparently married a second time and had children; no records of his other children have been noted at the time of this writing. IGI, p. 37,006, ostensibly shows a Daniel Tolles (or Tolls) born ABT 1605, associated with Withersfield, CT; this occurrence is questioned. Although entries appear for a Daniel Tolles in the early 1600s, it is not at all clear that this was the case. It may be a hypothesis forwarded by someone who studied these records. A marriage took place, according to the IGI, (to Mrs. Daniel Tolls or Tolles) in <1629>. This marriage date is appropriate for a birth of Henry Tolles in 1630: "Son of (possibly Daniel Tolles), born about 1630 (possibly in England, possibly in Wales) married Sarah, resided at Saybrook, CT, and New Haven, Conn[12]." The facts are not at all clear. "Henry Tolls" is mentioned in IGI as having Sp: "Sarah Tolls[32]." Another reference: "Towle, Towel, Toale, Tole, Toll, Toule, or Towell, Henry, Wethersfield, rem to Saybrook soon aft. 1668, had w. Sarah, and one ch. prob. Henry, desert. his w. wh. in 1676 was divorc. for his desert. above six yrs. as in Trumbull's Col. Rec. II. 293, with liberty if shall 'have opportun. to join hers. in m. with ano. man[10].'" "The Colonial Records of Connecticut, Vol. 2, p. 293, in an account of the Session of the General Court at Hartford, on October 23rd, 1676, makes mention of the granting by that Court, of a marriage divorce, to a Sarah Towle, on the grounds of desertion by her husband (his name is not given). On account of the different spelling of the name, it would appear improbable that the Sarah Towle thus mentioned was the wife of Henry Tolles[12]."

Henry Tolles[2] (II); b. Nov 1669[32], Fairfield, CT[21]; Saybrook, CT[23, 75], d. Jan 1750[2], New Haven, CT[12, 75]; bur. on the green, New Haven, CT; moved to Grove St. Cem.; Father: Henry Tolles[2] (I) (1630–); Mother: Sarah; Sp: Dorothy Thomas[2]; m. 13 Apr 1693[32], New Haven, CT[32]; Ch: Henry; Rachael; Samuel; Daniel; Dorothy; Experience; Ebenezer; Sp: Mary Goodsell[2]; m. 5 Sep 1728[2], New Haven, CT[75]; Ch: Mary; Sp: Mary Hotchkiss[56]; m. 26 Oct 1745[32], New Haven, CT[32]. Notes: Henry Tolles' II remains lie in the New Haven Green, and his head stone is in the Grove Street Cemetery, next to Yale's Woolsey Hall[38]. Source: from Donald Jacobus, Genealogy of Connecticut Families. Marriage recorded as "Henry Toles[32]." From Anderson's History of Waterbury, CT, Vol. 1, pp. 357-358: "In 1724 Henry Toles, of New Haven, Bought Samuel Barnes 40 (pound) Right in Town of Waterbury." "In 1728 Daniel and Henry Toles, laid out lands on Barnes Right." "In 1729 Tolles farm became Joseph Nichol's farm." "In 1729, Henry and Daniel Toles, of New Haven, sold to Joseph Osborn, of the same place, one-half of all their lands and rights in land in Waterbury, obtained from their father, who bought said lands of Samuel Barnes and John Brown[12]." The following is by Miriam D. Phifer, 12272 - 131st Circle S, Hastings, MN 55033, dated September 1984: "I am an 8th-generation descendant of Henry TOLLES, born the first week of November, 1669, in Saybrook CT. He died in Jan 1750, at the age of 81. His first wife was Dorothy Thomas, daughter of Daniel Thomas & Rebecca Thompson. She was born about 1674 in Bloomfield, Hartford, CT and died 19 Oct 1727. They were married 13 April 1693 by William Jones. My line comes through their daughter, Rachel TOLLES, who married Deacon Joseph Ruggles of Suffield CT on 15 Nov 1722. Henry TOLLES married 2nd Mary Goodsell on 5 Sep 1728, and 3rd either Mary Hotchkiss or Sarah Sperry (conflicting records). The only information I have on the parents of Henry TOLLES is that his father was also named Henry TOLLES (TOWLE) and was born about 1640/50. He was 'of Wethersfield CT' and moved to Saybrook soon after 1668. His wife sarah (____) divorced him in 1676, after he had deserted her. On Monday, October 3, 1983, my son and I stopped at the office of the Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven CT in an attempt to find the burial records of my husband's third great-grandmother, Mary Sterling, and her husband, Darlington Phelps Grant. As we were talking to the superintendent, he informed us that the oldest gravestones in New Haven had been moved to the Grove Street Cemetery and were propped along the North wall. We drove to the location given us for the Sterling/Grant graves, but there were no stones. My son, who shares my interest in genealogy, and who has tramped through many old cemeteries to locate stones and make rubbings for me, suggested that as we were there and might never be again, we should at least walk along the North wall and glance at some of the stones. He stopped at one that was broken and with some of the lettering gone and said, 'Isn't there a Henry TOLLES in our line?' We photographed the stone and then went back to the office to consult a book entitled 'Inscriptions of Tombstones in New Haven Erected Prior to 1800.' The gravestone was, indeed that of Henry TOLLES, and a footnote at the bottom of p. 596, gave the date of his first marriage, as well as the names of his bride and her parents!; I would surely like to hear from anyone who has more information on this family, and will be glad to reimburse postage." His will is dated 7 Dec 1747[73]. Headstone inscription: "In Memory of Mr. Henry Tolles. Who died Jany. ye 1750, aged 81 years[12]."
