Why Linux... 1. It's Free. Bill & Steve don't get a dime for it!!! 2. It's community oriented NOT dollar oriented. 3. It's very customizeable. Lots of OPTIONS. 4. OS is less vulnerable to spyware, viruses, malware. 5. Users can be contributors. Generally this is encouraged. 6. Languages - available in many languages - global user base 7. Repository systems when avail make customization a snap. 8. Live CDs eliminate spyware retention & software failures. DRAWBACKS: 1. Significant Learning Curve for many users. 2. Very different filesystem & structures can be confusing 3. Some hardware support issues - but getting better. 4. Less 'commercial' support and software availability. 5. System syntax & commands vary a bit depending upon distro. 6. gamers will likely be disappointed - the latest games not available 7. does not work properly on some computers. Try different distro. DECODING LINUX JARGON: ALSA: Sound driver CONSOLE: Like a DOS shell, but Unix shells have different features & commands in them - Linux shells include Bash, Bourne, Korn, etc. DIR=ls CD=cwd DEL=rm DISTRO: Linux has many "distributions" (versions/editions/projects) based on purpose. GUI: GNOME, KDE, Fluxbox, enlightenment: These are graphical interfaces. Most linux applications use one of these. Normally they use X-windows graphic framework. MAN PAGES: - most linux commands have documentation. Type: 'man program' in a shell to get documentation for the command "program."
