Who is Winning the Argument? Something amazing is starting to occur around the world, creationists are starting to win debates on the origin of the universe and on the problems of the Theory of Evolution. I believe this is the result of a rising level of education and old-universe creationism's growing popularity in the creationist community. In the past, creationists were trapped between their fear and ignorance of science and their having to answer science's accusations against their beliefs. Creationists are now becoming more scientifically sophisticated. They are now not as afraid of science, probably because they are starting to realize science is not inherently evil when practiced without bias and the fact that science and logic support their positions. The problem for atheist and agnostic scientists started when it was found that the universe had a beginning. This discovery was shocking and offensive to them because of what it implied. Arthur Eddington even commented that the notion of a beginning to the universe is "repugnant" to him. Science was previously hailed as the thing that would bring down creationism. Now it was finding itself agreeing with what the creationists have said all along. Science was starting to become "safe" for creationists. The growing popularity and sophistication of old-universe creationism has helped rescue science from an exclusive club that required one to be an atheist or agnostic to join. Scholars like J. P. Moreland, the editor the wonderful compilation I recommend to anyone interested this subject called "The Creation Hypothesis," who possess degrees from secular educational institutions have taken up the banner of creationism of the old-universe form. The tenants of old-universe creationism state that the Bible's six days of creation are not 24 hour days as we know them today. This position is said to be compatible with the meaning of "day" in the Biblical creation account. Old-universe creationists hold that the scientific evidence for a 15 - 20 billion year old universe is strong and does not conflict at all with their theories or the Bible. New arguments for the existence of God, given an old universe that had a beginning and appears to be designed and given the problems Darwinian evolution has faced by a lack of real evidence, have allowed creationists to gain an upper hand in debates in recent years.
