Shocking Survey Results I recently came across an interesting, on-going survey (with over 10,000 respondents so far) on religion from Survey.net. I found the results both shocking and telling. I found them "telling" because they show the Internet population to be very open to the idea of the existence of a "supreme being." I found the results "shocking" because they show Christians to be very relativistic and perhaps even uncaring in their thinking. A full 65.5% of the respondents to this survey from Survey.net answered "Yes" to the question: "Do you believe in a supreme being?" While 12.3% answered that they do not know. Only 20.1% answered "No." Last I heard, twenty percent is about four times the US average when it comes to atheists in the general population.(1) Those of you who are reading this and are among the people who would answer that you "do not know" if a supreme being exists, please read a logical argument for the existence of God based on science. Of the 65.5% who believe in a supreme being, more than half claimed to be Christians.(2) A total of 38.8% described their religious beliefs as "Christianity." That leaves 26.7% who believe in a supreme being who are not Christians. If you are one of over a quarter of the Internet population in this category, please read some logical reasons to believe the supreme being that exists is the God of the Bible. If you have any questions at all, please e-mail the WWCW at wwcw@wwcw.org. We are here in part to help you discover the available evidence for the identity of the supreme being you already believe exists. The shocking portion of the survey had to do with the 38.8% who claimed to be Christians. 12.2% of the Christians claimed to belong to a non-Christian sect or church. I'm hoping the 12.2% response is due to a misunderstanding of the question. The survey also showed that religion in general is losing 6.9% more people than they are gaining. The most shocking portion of the survey, one that nearly floored me when I read it, is that only 7.5% of the respondents claimed that if one does not "believe," he or she is lost. Many chose answers like "Religion is personal" or "Religion is the key to happiness and eternal peace" over "If you do not believe, you are lost." Religion may be the key to happiness and peace and some may even think it is personal (Christianity is not merely personal) but Christians at least should hold that if one does not believe, he or she is lost. If, as Christians, we do not tell people this, people may think any old belief will do. Any old belief will not do. What matters is if the belief is true. Many beliefs contradict each other on the question of salvation, so they cannot all be true. That would violate a law of logic called the "law of non-contradiction." If what Christianity says, or more accurately, if what Jesus said is true, then there is only one way to our creator, the creator of the universe. Jesus claimed, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father [the supreme being] except through me."(3) For evidence that Christianity, and the claim of Jesus, is true, please read a paper on the identification of who the supreme being is. Since 38.8% of the respondents claim to be Christian and 7.5% of the respondents believe there is only one way to be saved, only small number of even the Christians believe Jesus is the only way and care enough to tell their friends and family this belief over some feel-good message that could cause eternal harm. Sincerely and in Love,
Mark Harpt
