The World Wide Christian Web - Past Editor's Comments

The Truth Matters

One thing I like to emphasize on this site is the truth matters. My opinions, beliefs and feelings do not hold much weight if they contradict the truth. Christianity would not count for anything if its claims did not mesh with the truth. The truth is important, only highly deceived or ignorant people would believe something they know is not true.

What brought this to mind was a sudden knock at my door when I was working at home recently. The second knock was quite forceful so I got up from my computer and looked out the peephole in my front door. I saw two ladies, one with a bag full of books and materials. They were obviously Jehovah's Witnesses and looked loaded for bear so, naturally, I answered the door.

When conversing with visitors of this nature, I like to get right to the heart of the matter, to a most important question: Is what they believe and wish me to believe true? If their beliefs are not true, those beliefs should not be believed by any thinking person. Being one who doesn't like to beat around the bush, I told them their assertions cannot be believed because those assertions have been proved incorrect. The Watchtower publication (their method of disseminating their beliefs ) has made many untrue statements in the past. Specifically, in the Watchtower publication the end of the world has been predicted multiple times and has been wrong each and every time.(1) The claim that the Watchtower publication represents divine inspiration from an all knowing god is shown to be incorrect by the fact that the supposed inspired text has been wrong in the past. If the divine inspiration claim for the contents of the Watchtower publication is not true, the Jehovah's Witnesses' entire belief system is undermined, since that belief system is so closely tied to the accuracy of the Watchtower publication.

My visitors at first tried to claim there has never been incorrect predictions in the Watchtower and when I asked them not to lie to me they then tried to make the claim the Bible does the same thing. Of course, that would not make their bad predictions suddenly correct even if the Bible did the same thing and the Bible does not do the same thing, which I pointed out to them. Finally as they made a move to leave, they said that since I had my mind made up, I could not be convinced otherwise. No, I could not be convinced of something that was proved to be untrue. Well, to make a long story short, they went on their way denying the Watchtower ever made incorrect predictions of the future. History revisionism is common among those whose beliefs have been shown to be false in so obvious a manner as has the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormon beliefs.(2)

What is important is every claim should be tested for truth before it is believed. The Bible writers challenge the reader to do just that. The thing is, Christianity is the only religion that can withstand such a test. No others stand under scrutiny.(3) Because of this, Christianity is definitely worth evaluating for yourself. So please take your time and look around the WWCW. The evidence you're looking for is here. Some good starting points would be the Book Reviews and Q & A sections, where you can find materials that contain just such evidence.

Notes:
1. The Watchtower publication predicted the end times were to come in 1914. Then they revised the prediction to 1925 when nothing happened. Then after losing a lot of followers when those dates came and went, they started being a bit more cautious, they predicted the end was "very near" in 1930, 1931, 1933, 1939, 1940, 1941, and on and on… you get the idea. The are lots of other problems with every aspect of the Jehovah's Witness cult. For a quick and easy to read reference booklet on this subject, please pick up, "The Facts on Jehovah's Witnesses" by John Ankerberg and John Weldon (Harvest House Publishers).
2. The Mormons have revised and corrected their supposed divinely inspired texts countless times over the years, continuously denying that any such revisions ever took place.
3. All religions except for Christianity fail the truth test. They are either inconsistent, self contradictory, conflicting with obvious fact, etc. For more on this see Who is the God that Exists.

I want to learn more about how I can have a relationship with the creator of the universe.
