Why All The Hate?

The last Presidential Election here in the US featured some of the most mean-spirited, hateful rhetoric I have ever heard. And the rhetoric has only ratcheted up since then. After watching an interview with a nationally known conservative speaker and author and hearing of the physical threats heaped upon her and others like her, I started trying to think of what may have caused the current lack of civility coming from those on the political left. In addition to threats against conservatives, anyone paying attention must realize the level of real hate the left seems to feel for the current President. Why?

I think the reasons the left in the US seem to be consumed with hate, which is odd since they have always preached "peace and love" and "do your own thing," is because of the following:

  • The Clinton impeachment and humiliation.
  • The close 2000 Presidential Election.
  • An extreme dislike of anything resembling traditional conservative Christianity.

There may be liberals that can't be painted with the broad brush I am using but those liberals don't seem to be very vocal nationally. Compare what I say with what you see and make your own decision as whether I'm right or wrong.

President Clinton was the darling of liberals everywhere. I'm not sure why, since he governed as President from the middle and seemed very interested in public opinion, which is typically conservative. It could have been because of his charm and charisma but it was more likely because he broke the line of succession of the Reagan-presidents (Reagan and Bush Sr.). President Reagan was conservatism incarnate, and his programs were an overwhelming success. With decades of liberal program failures, this had to get under the skin of liberals everywhere. President Reagan turned a terrible economy around and defeated the greatest threat the world has ever known until then, Communism (a darling of some liberals). President Clinton was also humiliated through his actions and later dishonesty about those actions. No more details are needed here on that. Liberals blamed conservatives for Clinton's downfall. Personal accountability and morality don't seem to be liberal strengths, in my opinion.

As most of us remember, the 2000 Presidential Election was a nail-biter - as close at it could be. In the end, President Bush defeated Vice President Gore in all subsequent recounts. Liberals felt as if the election was stolen from them. I have a feeling, as shown in the 2004 election which wasn't even close, liberals will claim the election was stolen whenever they lose. When Bush was reelected in 2004, liberals were beside themselves. The man they hated was back for four more years.

My last point is that, in my opinion, a major reason liberals are so angry is because Bush and many conservatives are traditional conservative Christians. It is sad I have to say "traditional conservative Christian" when describing Christians but its come to that. I must distinguish between Bible-believing Christians and people who claim to be Christians but do not hold to the basic tenets of Christianity (the inerrancy of scripture, the deity of Christ, Christ as the only way to salvation, etc.). To me some liberals represent that age-old group of people spoke of in the Bible that hate God and everything truly good. They live in darkness and hate the light, as the Bible says. These people will always hate anything that suggests a God or that implies personal responsibility emanating from a moral force outside of themselves. These types of people should be dealt with as the Bible tells us - we are to love our enemies and do good to those who wish us harm. This will show Christ to the world. With that said, we still need to be active and vote, because it is our right and responsibility to do good as we have the opportunity. There is no better way to help people then to given them freedom and the ability to make a decision for Christ. Socialism and Communism won't do that. Only conservatism will set people free, truly free.
