It Must Be Christmas… I happened to turn on the television the other day. While channel surfing I paused too long on a show called “The Mystery of Christmas” (48 Hours Mystery, CBS, December 20, 2005). Let’s see what the show is claiming: a denial of the validity of the Biblical gospels, a denial of the virgin birth, the accusation that Mary was an adulteress, John Dominic Crossan (a member of the Jesus Seminar) being interviewed as a "scholar" -- it must be Christmas time! There are few things you can really count on but one is that the Jesus Seminar and others who are very much against traditional Christianity will use a willing media to attempt to combat the truth of the Bible. During the Christmas season, the story of the birth of the Son of God, Jesus, is brought to the forefront of the public conscious, and that is dangerous to those who despise the truth. Certain factions seem to be vested in a battle to rid the mention of Jesus or the Bible in the public square. These factions are especially active at Christmas time, more so in the last decade or so. In fact, I can’t remember seeing a show on one of the major television networks that had a solely positive message about the birth of Christ at Christmas time. Some shows, like the one I happened upon this year, throw in a few Christian viewpoints but they always counter those viewpoints with comments from what they call “scholars” (Jesus Seminar members and the like). What could be motivating this anti-Christian bias in the media? People living in darkness hate the light. The light illuminates imperfection. If God exists and if the Son of God was born about 2,000 years ago, then we all have a higher power to answer to, we are not the rulers of our own lives. If Jesus was born as the Bible says he was and as the evidence supports, then those who want to live their lives in the dark will do anything they can to try to convince themselves the light doesn’t exist, even if that means they must attempt to extinguish the light’s flame in any way they can. The flame will never be extinguished. No matter how many anti-Christian shows are thrown at us, the truth of the birth of Christ will not go away. Christmas will not lose its meaning. Critics and skeptics have come and gone but Christmas will go on. Next year we’ll once again proclaim, “it must be Christmas time” while the critics once again close their eyes tightly and aim the fire hose… -ed
