Christianity: the Driving Force behind Science If you think science is advanced purely by the scientific method and unbiased reason, think again. The fact is, many new theories are formulated because, and many old theories are supported by, the fear of the tenets of Christianity. When science finds itself starting to move in the direction of verifying the text of Christianity, the Bible, all sorts of contorted theories are marched out for public display. This seems like nothing more than damage control. When his theories started supporting the Biblical claim that the universe was expanding and thus had a beginning, Albert Einstein was displeased. Arthur Eddington called the notion of a beginning to the universe "repugnant."[1] The Steady State theory was bolstered on this feeling. In fact, scientists are still attempting to formulate theories to get around the implications of a universe with a beginning; the completely unsupported multi-verse theory[2] is one of the more recent attempts. So without any supporting evidence, theories are formulated to avoid logical conclusions. This is what drives large sectors of science.[3] If the universe had a beginning, then it must have had a cause for that beginning outside of the universe.[4] Charles Darwin said that if the theory of evolution (gradualism) is true, there would be an innumerable number of transitional fossils in the fossil record. Darwin believed that in time, transitional fossils would be found.[5] After over 100 years true transitional fossils are nonexistent in the fossil record. The theory of evolution is completely bolstered by the implications if evolution was found not to be true. If evolution is not true, then theories like intelligent design would fill the gap. Intelligent design implies an intelligent designer. These are but a few examples of how science is driven by Christianity, or more specifically, how science is driven by the attempt to avoid supporting Christianity and the Bible. The problem for scientists is, the more "science" they do the more evidence accumulates for the validity of Christianity and the more they must stray from the scientific values they claim to hold dear.
