Bible Q & A
"Is atheism a tenable belief system?"Not in the least. If fact, the atheist belief system is the epitome of blind faith. First we need a definition of atheism because it is popular today to try to twist its real meaning. Atheism is, in short, the belief that God does not exist.(1) It is also a belief that cannot be proven and has no evidence, as I will show. Blind faith is the belief in something without evidence or contrary to the evidence. So atheism is blind faith if there is no evidence for it or if it is contrary to the evidence. It is both, but here I will show the prior, that there not only is no evidence for it but that there can never be evidence for it. It is very doubtful that one can logically prove that something does not exist.(2) This makes sense because one cannot be everywhere at once. This especially makes sense when we are talking about a thing/person that may at some points exist outside our universe. So it becomes obvious that one cannot prove that God does not exist. Looking at the definition of atheism - the belief that God does not exist - we see that atheism cannot be proven because one cannot prove that God does not exist. Looking at the definition of blind faith - the belief in something without evidence - we see that atheism is the very definition of blind faith because it cannot be proven nor can evidence be presented to attempt to prove it. Christianity, on the other hand, is not a blind faith. There's plenty of logical and scientific evidence for the existence of the God of the Bible and the Bible's accuracy. This fact makes Christianity far superior to atheism as a belief system. Notes: 1. The Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy (Cambridge University Press, 1998) defines atheism (from the Greek meaning "not god") as: "the view that there are no gods. A widely used sense denotes merely not believing in God and is consistent with agnosticism. A stricter sense denotes a belief that there is no God; this use has become the standard one..." (p.51) 2. Probably because atheists realized the problem of proving a negative, attempts were made at arguments that would somehow rule out all possible gods or the God of the Bible specifically. The argument know as "The Problem of Evil" is often used in an attempt to disprove the existence of the God of the Bible. The main problem with such an argument is that it must assume God at the outset. For evil to exist, the existence of an absolute moral law must be accepted. If an absolute moral law exists, there must be an absolute moral lawgiver (God). There are other problems with The Problem of Evil argument as well. To date, atheists have not been able to come up with any arguments against all gods that cannot be refuted either. |
