Bible Q & A

The WWCW would like to thank David L. Phillips, who is a biological research scientist, for the answer to the following question:

Does the Theory of Human Evolution Make Sense?

As a biological research scientist for the last 10 years, I've had numerous opportunities to debate creation vs. evolution with the great majority of these who hold to the evolutionistic view.

One question that has many times stumped evolutionists is, "If evolution is how human beings came to exist, where did we get the concepts of 'right' and 'wrong'?"; in other words, if all of us evolved in a purely physical fashion, and there is no such thing as a soul or spirit, then how can any human being charge any other human being with doing that which is wrong, since we are all just higher animals, and none of us (including our values, likes, dislikes, etc.) is any "better" than anyone else?

If evolution is true, then there can be NO moral, legal or ethical standards whatsoever that have any real or ultimate significance or meaning, since all of these have arisen from humans at some point in history, and no human is any better than any other human. For example, we must not hold someone like Hitler or Saddam Hussein in contempt, for they were merely acting according to the dictates of their respective views of what is right or wrong, only following the dictates of the complex, evolutionarily developed, biochemical processes of their brains (not of any soul/spirit/inner man). Thus, none of the social moral codes developed over the years by any culture is superior to any other.....who are you to judge my morals?

If I decide that murdering someone is part of what it will take for me to have a fulfilling life, then what ultimate standard of values is there that will judge me wrong? Do we go into the jungles and attempt to prevent carnivores from killing other animals because it is morally unacceptable? But we do have laws forbidding murder of humans, who are just a higher animal... why? Why do we now see so many environmental protection laws passed, when, if I'm just an animal, no one should blame me for polluting, since I'm just doing what human animals do?

To summarize, if evolution is true, then there can be no ultimate right and wrong in any arena, since your concept of right and wrong are simply your OPINION, and no better than mine or anyone elses, all the way from telling "white lies" to murder. If evolution were true, complete anarchy should be in place. It is not.

Ultimately, in science, nothing can be "proved" unless it is directly observable and repeatable. No scientist worth his/her salt would ever publish data from their lab that they hadn't rigorously validated and repeated, yet this is not the case for evolutionary "science." Evolutionists might claim to have physical evidence for their position, but it all boils down to circumstantial evidence that must rely on many assumptions that cannot be validated, since no one can go back in time and actually observe the supposed process of evolution, or the process of the CREATION of the universe by Almighty God, which is what I believe in. Ultimately, then, one must decide to put one's faith/trust in a Creator, or in the system of evolution, since neither can be proved absolutely by scientific observation or experiments.

I enjoy debating these issues, but in the end, I look to the Bible as my final authority in all things. Romans chapter 1 is very clear on the fact that ALL people have a God-given knowledge of the Creator, since He has placed this knowledge within them (also the knowledge of good and evil, NOT evolutionarily derived), and, that many have chosen to ignore and reject the Creator and worship the creation (man included) instead. I have no animosity at all towards those who hold to the evolutionist stand, but rather compassion, because they are without hope and without God in this world, and face judgement for sin without Jesus Christ. I'm thankful for the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. It is also my desire, and indeed the command of the Lord Jesus, to go and tell these unsaved evolutionists there is forgiveness and hope through faith in Him.
