Bible Q & AThe WWCW would like to thank Mark Harnetiaux, Financial Consultant with Financial Network Investment Corporation, for the answer to the following question: Are Christians required to tithe? The concept of tithing is not just an Old Testament concept. The root of the tithe is illuminated in scripture in such a way that it transcends any time constraints or Mosaic laws and can even be considered a "challenge" from God. Tithing and offering is a Pre-Mosaic Law commandment from God. After the fall in the garden, man was instructed to give back 10% to the Lord. Look up verses Genesis 4:4 and Genesis 14:18-20. The Law given after Exodus 20 spells out the legal procedures and requirements, but does not originate the offerings. Not only are we to give from our increases in CASH, we are to give of our time and devotion. Our offering is of the first fruits we are given by God (ie. gross pay, profits from home sales, etc.). This even includes 10% of our LIVES. Just think how our lives would be blessed if we devoted 10% of our 24 hour day to the study and glorification of our Lord (2 hours and 24 minutes). Personally, I spend this time listening to Christian radio programs, praying, contemplating, discussing with others, and reading scriptures (and searching the 'net). Also look up Matthew 23:23. The lord has laid down a challenge for tithes and offerings. Look up Malachi 3:8-12. It is a crime not to give tithes and gifts, but God will not be in our debt. If we give with a joyful heart, He will pour out blessings beyond our imagination. Please note that gifts are above and beyond the required tithe. If I give 11%, the extra 1% is a gift. BUT, just as on Earth, If I give with the demand of something in return, it is worthless. If I make a gift, it should be without strings attached. The tithe is equivalent to the animal sacrifices of the past. They are given in obedience. They are given freely. And they are given to glorify and spread His love.
