J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge

J.N. "Ding" Darling seems like an odd name for a wildlife refuge until you know a little about the man it was named after.  Mr. Darling, who passed on in 1963, was a renowned editorial cartoonist and avid conservationist. He was the father of the Federal Duck Stamp Program, founder of the National Wildlife Federation, and creator of the Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit Program.

Located on Sanibel Island on the west coast of Florida, the refuge itself is as impressive as the person for whom it was named. Herons, egrets, shorebirds, eagles, ospreys, hawks, spoonbills, they're all here; and most importantly, accessible to photographers.  For the latest information, call the visitor center at 239-472-1100 or visit their web site at http://dingdarling.fws.gov/.

Great Egret

Most of the time, you find these guys wading in the shallow water so I took advantage of a perfect blue sky background when I spotted this one in a tree.
