YAK-50 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

These questions and answers are presented here to assist owner/pilots and the information from this survey may be included in the POH for the Yak-50. #1 When going cross-country at a relaxed pace, just enjoying your airplane, what power settings do you use, and what speed do you attain (Vrp)?

Replies: (MJ & BH) 60%/600mm/230 kph about 35-40 ltr./hr. -- (LB) 65%/ 700mm/240km/h about 50 ltr./hr.-- (RL) 59%/580mm/230 kph about 40-45 Ltr/hr. -- (SS) 65%/650mm 120 Kts/rh.

#2 When you really have to get there in a hurry, what power settings do you use, and what speed do you attain (Vr)?

Replies: (MJ) 70%/750mm/260 kph about 60 ltr./hr -- (LB) 80%/ 800mm 270km/h 65 Ltr/hr. -- (RL) 70%/750mm/260 kph about 60 ltr./hr. -- (SS) 70%/throttle set so not to overboost.

#3 What settings do you find best for cross-country, what power settings do you use, and what speed do you attain (Vxc)? 

Replies:  MJ: 60%/600mm LB: 65%/700mm. -- RL: 64%/640mm/ 250kph 50 ltr/hr. -- FB: Recently installed a Hoffman 3 bladed prop. Outside temp 20 F.  70% RPM, 70mm Manifold Pressure, indicated 160 Knots. 

#4 Have you found any bad habits from flying the Yak-50? Give us your "war stories."

 MJ: Negative flick (snap roll) on down 45 will grab the controls and go very flat. "Basically it will go very flat and the control inputs will be very heavy to recover from. Gyroscopes also hinder the recover as I recall. I do not do this now. I had a friend loose 3,000 ft when the a/c buried itself. He was at 10,000 just finding out what the a/c will do luckily. You will need to cut the throttle then get your second hand on the stick, not easy with minus 3 or 4 going on!!! "
