We are in the process of making an agreement with the marriott hotel in phili for the re-union. We need to get an estimate of who can make it. please contact me with an estimate of how many with your party. For example would you be bringing your wife or signifiant other. This way we will not be taking much of a risk. The hote room rate is suppose to be $129 per evening. At this point I just want an unofficia head count.

Just saw the pictures of the lady from the yards. Almost chokes you up a bit. I still feel attached to her. Some of the best years were on her, alot of memories, hardships, friendships and a few scary times. Alot of people just don't understand some of the stories when you tell them. It's like Capt. McNicholas said one time on the bridge during Sea/Anchor Detail coming back from the Med in 87, "Welcome Home". This site is home for alot of memories. Keep in touch guys.

Thanks Jesse for getting in touch. I read the whole archive and it is really good to see some old names. Hey Blake, if you get in touch with Chief Thomas, let me know. Serving onboard for 3 1/2 years from 84-87 was an incredible and once in a life time experience. Love the reunion idea. Really good to see some of the names from the past, Bullwhip, Schrickle, Ernewein, the Brown Borthers and others. Saw alot of people come and go in that time frame. Alot of stories and memories there. It seemed that when I was on she was a tired lady that did her time. But we had a great crew that made sure she got us home everytime! Haze Gray All The Way!!

Howdy-I was on the "Happy Harry" from 10/70 to10/72. We had a lot of fun, saw a bunch of forign soil, and drank a lot of beer. Our skipper was "BOOM-BOOM' Bowen. He loved to shoot those missles and didn't need much of a reason-(Visiting cubscout troop, girlscout selling cookies, etc.)Life on Yarnell was good but I don't care to do it again.
p.s. does anyone know how to contact Jerry Diles or Darrel Graves? Both lived in upstate N.Y.

I served aboard the Yarnell from June 1969 until May 1971. I arrived as a Seaman, made BM3 during Unitas XI (what a hoot!) and spent 23 years after discharge in the Naval Reserve. I finally retired in 1994 as a BMC and a licensed Barge Ferry Pilot (got into the Seabees in 1980). I could sit here and write for hours but my best memories are of crossing the Equator and Freddie Roberts playing the Phantom at night while we were at sea and scaring the bejeesus out of everybody. I know of several shipmates who have passed on including SN Andy Mondo and BM1 Bill Curtis. If anyone knows how to contact Vincent (Vinnie) Longobardo from the Jersey Shore, I sure would like to hear from him. I was over in the Gulf with my Reserve Unit also so give me a holler if any of you were there, too. I'm in Cleveland, Ohio and in the telephone book. Fair winds and following seas!

I was an ETN2. Did 2 Carabean cruises, 1 UNITAS, 1 trip to Nova Scotia and 1 Med Cruise from 1971 to 1972. My Captain
was A.M. Bowen and the XO was LCDR Ring. The First Captain
we had was Captain Lessman when we came out of the yards in Boston after recommissioning. We had the greatest crew in
all the Navy. Crossing the Equator in 1970 was a real hoot.
Would love to hear from more of my shipmates. Come-on guys
don't forget ole H.E.Y. "Happy" as we called her.

Was on board 76-81, North Atlantic, Med cruise, Charleston yards, Gitmo and finished up w/ 75 days at sea durring the Iranian Hostage crisis. Served in aft engine room and A-gang. Agree with sentiments of others and start of website -that time has eased the "bad" memories but there are still alot of good ones. Great to finall connect to site - looked before but couldn't find one.

My view of the Navy was only as a Marine in the late 40's, but nephew Ty Cathey owns a plank, and had many slide photos from his service on the Harry from '62 to '65. The leap from his slides of the 60's to the boneyard pictures is very sad. I wish all of you well with the reunion plans.

I served on the Harry from 3/77-8/80. There isn't a day goes by that my Navy experience doesn't come to mind or I mention it to someone. The "Harry" was an experience (good and bad) but the education was invaluable for a boy out of WV. I saw her in the Phili yards a couple of weeks ago, superstructure gone. I would love to hear from the OI Division.

A few other plankowners are very interested in planning a re-union for the Harry E. Yarnell. We have been thinking about having it near Phili so maybe we can get an invite to do onboard the HEY. Maybe Princeton, NJ. Anyway I would like to know who might be interested in participating and also being a part of a planning committee. Please contact me using my AOL account or work account denis.kosar@ssmb.com. So far we have two other plankowners willing to help, R Donnally (rdonne1645@aol.com) and Joe Tannenbaum (tannenba@futureone.com). Drop any and all of us a line if you are interested.

I learned a lot on the Yarnell, mostly that I didn't know as much as I thought I did! I worked on the 3"50's on the radar units. Hope y'all have a super Christmas! I was Sonar Tech in CA Division onboard the HEY from 7/89-4/93. I had many great times while on the Harry. During my time we did a Med cruise, 2 Baltops, many Carribean Drugops and a STANAVFORLANT cruise. I'll never forget when we lost the main anchor while anchoring in Menton, France. I thought Capt Z was going to kill the Deck crew that day. I also remember the thousands of Polish people welcoming the Harry to Gydnia during the end of the Cold War.
I'm glad to see the Yarnell has a web page. I miss all the lifelong friends I made while I was onboard. After I got out in '93, I went to James Madison University to study Finance. I'm now a Bank Manager/Loan Officer in Alexandria, VA.

Glad to see the site is back up!

Memories - Fort Lauderdale during Spring Break; Ocho Rios Jamaica for a weekend; having to spend most of med cruise 86-87 in port because the fleet was "running out of gas". Painting that damn forward launcher under way. Doing what they said couldn't be done - splash a talos missile with a cross launcher shot (we just put the bird there - the FT's did the hard part)

I often travel rte 95 and see what the butcher's have done to our ship. Although the 17 is painted over I still know its her.

I had a great time on board from 84 to 87. If anyone from second division sees this, check in with me. If anyone hears from Marty Gile, Lauren Hilbun, or Eric Robinson please drop a line.

Just thought I would check in and say 'hello'. My fondest memories were playing in the Band with Len (Butch) Picha, Paul Dennert, George Camphouse and Mike Silva. Also being 'sea detail helmsman' up the Keil Canal, the 47 degree roll, numerous re-fueling, taking on stores and leaving and arriving at dockside; the 'mad yucker' and the aft missle house. I really loved it. Ron Thacker

I am a proud former crew member of ships company, 1st. Div., from Dec.1965 to Feb.1967. I came on board this great ship as a boy and Seaman recruit and left as a man and a Bosun's mate 3rd Class. During that time on board, I paid my dues on the mess decks, went over the side and Painted
the mother of all ship' more than I care to remember! My
GQ Sta. was the Port 3"50. I ran the paint locker before I was promoted to BM3 and then the Missle house security detail. The Yarnell at that time was the Flag Ship for DESRON 26 under Capt.Walker, Capts. Rothermel and kelley were my Co's. We did two Med cruises, once into the Black Sea, the North Atlantic/Keil Canal, Houston,Texas. I will forever remember with pride and passion my days on the Harry and those I sailed and served with. God bless you all.

I was a derelict 1st Div seaman aboard Harry during that time.(87-89) Doing quite well for
myself in the private sector these days. I hated the navy then. But I was just not
ready. But I do look back with some rather fond memories. It really was a good ship
with good bunch of folks onboard. You might have known me as Bull, or that guy

I was on the Happy Harry from '88-'90. I was a GMM2 in the aft missile house. Completed the last couple of months of the NTU yard period and was onboard for workups and deployment.
I was there for the MK-70 booster incident. It fired out of both ends and blew the sustainer over the side. I was just looking through my cruise book from the 89-90 med cruise. We was overseas when the Berlin wall fell and didn't hear much about it until we came back. We was also on perimeter duty during the Bush/Gorbachav(sic) meeting.
The last I heard, the Harry E. Yarnell (don't forget the "E") was in the ghost fllet in Philidalphia. Apparently the scrapping contract was voided after the ship was 5% demolished. If anyone lives up there, I would be interested in seeing a picture of her as she is now.

I also was a plank owner 62-64. I was an SM2 when I got out. Old C.E. Nelson had a colorful career along with Guy Levvitt. On my watch we had the Commissioning, Thresher disaster, Cuban Blockade and the 47 degree roll. I survived that and it was unbelievable. I was on the signal bridge when it happen and JJ Paul SM3 went sliding accross the deck on the bridge, The only thing that stopped him from going over the side was the stancheon guardrails. Great site. I am trying to get a re-union together for shipmates from NY,NJ,PA and Del. Okay I will include Conn, RI and Ma.

So far I have contacted Gunner Cherry, Joe Tannebaum and a few more. If interested drop me a line. We can maybe rent a conference room in a NJ hotel and show slides, movies pictures and other memorabilia. I have an old Union Jack that I saved along with a commissioning pennant.

I just wanted to elaborate a little on OS1 Adam's comments about the incident in Crete where the first liberty boat going ashore was pelted with tomatoesand run off because they didn't want us coming ashore on the `76 Med cruise. The XO, LT. CDR. Wterman, put in the POD the next day that it was unfortunate that hard earned liberty had to be terminated because of a bunch of people who could best be described as "The orifice at the end of the digestive chain", which is a saying I sometimes use to this very day to describe certain persons!

Anyone remember when when a Terrier rode a SPF-55 beam down to the ship and hit right next to the port bow? Lifted the whole front of the HEY out of the water. (RIMEX '72) Also recall reading the HEY collided with a Russian ship in the North Atlantic in the mid to late '70s? Never heard much more than a mention. I'm an engineer in Tampa now and it would be good to hear from some of the folks I served with.

Former Shipmate,

My name is Jerry Bussell and I was on board June 1990 to September 1993. I was a Gunnersmate second class and the Work Center Supervisor of the aft missile house.
My time on board was one that I will never forget. We did a NATO cruise in 1992 and served as the flag ship.
We went through the Panama Canal and came out on the Pacific Ocean where we proceeded to cross the Equator to receive our Shellback initiation.
I still have my "I love you wall" up and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think about something of my time on the Happy Harry.
Sincerely yours,

I got interested in Yarnell after reading a Reader's Digest article a couple of years ago about his idea in 1932 that the Hawian Islands were vulernable to attack and that he was responsable for a major Naval exercise that replacated the attack on Pearl Harbor. Anyway, I went to the Academy museum in March of this year and got to look at the full length painting of Yarnell. I was shown Yarnell's yearbook and was suprised to find out that he was in the seabattle of the Spanish American War. I hope this gets to you. John Barry

Everone knows that a Messdecks MAA should be an old first class who sits and drinks coffee, looks hungover and is very bad humored. In any event, you can imagine the success I had in motivating the mess cooks to prepare the messdecks for the commissioning ceremony. I recently read in a letter that I had written to my parents that I did not get off the ship to see Boston for a month.

When the ceremony was held on the messdecks, I recall standing very tall and watching some dignified people cut a cake with what must have been Admiral Yarnell's sword. Shortly after, I was relieved of my MAA duties and returned to the missile house much to my relief.

Hi,

My name is Ty Cathey. I was a member of the pre-commissioning detail and commissioning crew of the Yarnell. I served on her till June of 1965 and made the initial Med cruise.

When I reported aboard the ship, shortly before commissioning in March of 1962, it was determined, for some unknown reason, that I should become Messdecks MAA. Why they chose a 19 year old third class Missile Technician who had never been to sea I have never figured out

Hi Len, I replied to your email, but will respond directly to you too in case you don't get the other one. As I said, I remember the band well and recall standing on the fantail listening to you play. Also found your picture in the Med Deployment book. Mine is in Second Division. I was an MT which was changed to FT.

I had a nice email from Gunner Cherry who has an email in the Sea Stories section. I understand that he stayed in the Navy and became
a CWO.

Good to hear from you,

I was the 'sea detail helmsman' who steered the ship up the Kiel canal and was sitting at the 'Captain's Control Panel' in the missle house when we were in the Black Sea. Someone mentioned the 47 degree roll we took. I was on the bridge during that one. The 'crossed cannons' on the head door in the forward compartment (2nd division) were painted by me. I also was in the ship's rock&roll band with George Camphouse, Butch Picha, Paul Dennert and Mike Silva. I would love to hear from those guys. It's hard to believe it will be 32 YEARS this summer! We went to the Med several times, with 2 trips to the Black Sea including a port call in Romania. To the Indian Ocean once (great place, Perth), Caribbean a lot, North Atlantic once (Helsinki must be the most beautiful harbor on the planet). Spent 3 days in the North Atlantic in seas where you could look _up_ at waves from the bridge. I occasionally wonder what's happened to old friends and shipmates. Anyone remember on our 87 Med Cruise when we pulled the tail section of a crashed F-14 up on our fantail with about 200 guys pulling on the line then used the motor whaleboat to pick up the remains of the pilot? Gruesome is how I remember it! Anyway, I'm looking for some fellow BMs, QMs or SMs from back then (or anyone who served during that period). Comments: I am the wife of CWO3 William (Bill) Brewer. He served on the USS Harry E. Yarnell in the late 80's. Then he was Senior Chief Brewer. The reason I am writing is I just attended a ships reunion with my father who is retired. The reunion was for the USS Hugh Purvis DD 709, which he is a plank owner. I enjoyed myself so much and wanted to know if the Harry E. Yarnell is having a reunion anytime soon. I've been a Navy wife for 19 years and thought I understood the closeness you guys had, But until you go to a reunion and feel the emotions coming from shipmates, those old and new, no one is a stranger, and I have never been more welcomed to any group of people as I was to the Pervis reunion. So, I think that my husband would very much enjoy a reunion to the Harry E. Yarnell. I know that I would. Please, if you have the time, would you let me know what I have to do to get this information. My husband will be retiring in December 1998, I would like to surprise him with this information also. Thank you, Pat Brewer Proud to be a Navy wife.

Comments: I served on the Harry E. from 1983-1987. I was a Quartermaster on the old girl under Captain Greer. Funny she got scrapped, after we spent several months in Portsmouth getting Phalanx installed and work done on those damn steam boilers. In my tour, we were trailing a screw about 30% of the time, but she did us proud by turning almost 34 knots during our Gitmo trials in 83. Anyway, it's nice that you are keeping the memory of CG-17 alive. For all her shortcomings, I was proud to serve on the Yarnell.

Comments: I served from 83 to 87. We had a lot of good times and hard times. The crew always stuck together. Unfortunatly it appears that I am the only Gunner's Mate that uses a computer. (No slight to the earlier MT.) Top this one - a lit acetylene torch in the forward house while underway with a "full" magazine. Howdy to Buns who signed in earlier this year. I now work as a disabilities specialist. My boss figured that since I could lift 28 foot long bottle rockets I could probably lift a person in a wheelchair. Give em' hell Harry, Sorry to hear about the scrap yard.

I made two Med cruises during my tour of duty. We even went into the Black Sea which the Russians claimed was theirs. One newpaper account indicated that the Yarnell was the first American man-of-war to enter the Black Sea since the days of wooden sailing ships. Subject: Hi Guys!

Wonderful site!
I am proud to say that I served as a FTC (FTM) on the
Yarnell from 1980 through 1984. I have many fond remembrances from my
days aboard the "Happy Harry". There was the time that, during a flag
exercise in the Black Sea, (this would have been in about 1983 or so) we
ran right through a (Soviet) Russian task force. The Soviet ship sent us
a signal in effect to leave the area because of some sort of weapons
exercise. Upon orders from the flag we ignored the warning and steamed
on through. Many of us on deck saw what appeared to be a torpedo, on the
surface and tracking down our wake! I assume the OOD ordered full ahead
as we suddenly started putting turns on the screws and began making
tracks. The "torpedo" after a few minutes halted and upended. I think
this was some sort of remotely controlled target rather than a live
torpedo but we never really heard one way or the other.
I am sending a pic of the Yarnell, this is one of the "haze gray and
underway" pictures that the Navy has done every few years. The picture
was taken in about 1982. I'm in this one I think. I was on rover watch
the day this picture was taken and I was standing (I think) right behind
the starboard lookout on the bridge wing.

Today I work as a Microcomputer Analyst at a private college in St.
Petersburg Florida where I live with my lovely wife Deborah. Two dogs
and an odd number of cats. I will be sending more pics soon! (I have
lots!)
Thanks

My name is Kevin Reed. I served on the "Happy Harry" from 1988 to
1991. I was an MM2(SW) in A-Gang. I remember many good times and a few
that weren't so good (REFTRA in GTMO). I remember someone smuggling an
iguana on board in Cuba. The shore patrol came looking for it but, it was
never found. I think the biggest event I witnessed would be when Lech
Walensa toured our ship when we were in Gdynia, Poland. This happened
during Baltic Operations in 1990. During the 3 days we were in port,
30,000 people toured the Harry and the USS Kauffman.
Thanks for having this page. It's always nice to hear about the best

Just thought I'd drop you a line to let you know there are still some of us old swabbies out here.
I served on the Happy Harry in 66 & 67. FYI in 67 we took two Med cruises, one from Jan to May
and the 2nd from Sept. to Dec. We spent a total of 78 days in home port that year. We never did
let any grass grow under our feet.
Sorry for the first message I sent, I hit the wrong button and sent it by mistake.
Enjoyed your site, keep up the good work.

Have a Nice Day.... :-)

Greetings,

Please be kind enough to let me know who wrote the below, from your
page. I remember these events and people; McClean, Hubbard, Short etc.
Thanks,

Mike

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

was a 2X6er ETN-SN that served on the Happy Harry (AKA Hairy Urinal)
from Nov 74 to Aug 76. We ran aground in NY
harbor on a beautiful spring/summer day in '75. Seven tugs could not
pull us off the sand bar. All hands were ordered to the
bow and jump on command. Ops ("OOPS") boss had the con, XO told him to
turn off all radar and sonar. I served under
ETC-Helton. I was responsible for the UHF room located on the starboard
side of the Chiefs mess. Memorable people: Then
he was CWO2 Blausey and tried, unsuccessfully, to teach me how to drive
the boat, DS3 Leo McClean-always reading Louis
L'more and working(?) with DS3 Dan Short. EW3 Smith and EWSN Jack
Hubbard comedy team. I worked with ET3 Mike
Marshment, ETSN Dave Beddingfield, ET3 Ed Abete, ET3 Bob Fisher, ET3 Ken
Wright, ET3 Charlie "beer here" Bowers,
ET3 Mike(?) Bamforth, and many others.

Captain Buck was fired after they put this new screw on (only one
available, shipped from Hawaii), sank the drydock, pulled
the boat away only to realize they forgot to remove one of the concrete
supports from under the ship. Of course it cracked the
screw again. Captain Ahern(?) replaced him, Lt. Cmdr. Waterman was the
XO, MAA-1 Mizak was the notorious Master at
Arms. The repair work was done at the Norfolk D&S piers.

Someone told me the Happy Harry still held the record for taking a 47
degree roll and staying upright. Was that just a sea
story? It happened off of Cape Hatteris (my spelling is awful) when we
had the Rear Admiral on board. I think we were doing
PEB exercises or something. A civilian tanker went down ten miles in
front of us but we were "real Navy" and could handle the
storm and the 38ft swells even though we were top heavy. We took the
roll sometime around midnight.

I was stationed aboard the Yarnell in the early 70's and made a Med cruise on her. A young, dumb snipe on his first ship. I was a HTFN and remembered on the way back we ran into a hurricane, and just our luck, the CO was "Crash Duncan". Never failed, he always seemed to hit the dock we were mooring to. Maybe out at sea he could perform better, so what he tries to do is get close to the eye where it's suppose to be calmer. Well we tossed around like a cork in a tub that a big fat kid farted in...coming back from morning chow, headed for my berthing compartment, I stopped at the door on the fantail, starboard side. Only because there was a crowd looking out. All of a sudden a wave was up over the fantail whip antennnas heading straight for us! WE ALL screamed like little girls and I remembered sliding down the stair handrails to the berthing compartment below, looking up and seeing nothing but water! I then rolled into the berthing compartment with the water right behind me. My shipmates on the lower bunks were waking up to waves crashing over there bunks. Almost got a Captains Mast out of it......there were good memories on the Harry....

I spent from 9/71 to 8/74 on the "happy harry" . Made 2 med cruises. I noticed MM3 Gove's post & remember him as we overlapped time on board. I

got off when the ship when it was still in Philly for overhaul. Left as

MM2 in A-Gang. Best storys I can remember: 1. 1st Lt. fell thur plate glass window of bar while "mooning" in Kavalla, Greece (It's up the top of the Agean Sea), 2. Capt Duncan ran into another ship & the pier while docking in Newport & the next day someone snuck a box a "capt

crunch" cereal on to his table in his in-port cabin. 3. While on station 45 days in the Med during the 73 Mideast war, repair div was making wine, & gmm's were making "apple jack"

I have been looking for this page a long time. I sure am glad to finally find it.I rode the Harry from 76 - 79. She was at dry dock in Charleston when I requested permission to go ashore for the last time. I was the leading radioman when I left. Made two Med cruises with her. I finer time I cannot remember. Capt Spadoni was our CO. I sure hope I can come across some of my old ship mates. RMC Smallcombe, RM1 Anderson are just a couple. Zap are you out there anywhere ? I sure miss those days I have some great stories to share. Right now I am in the reserve. An RMC now. I will retire in April 98. Sure was good to see the note about Capt Spadoni from his son. I spent as little time on the bridge as I could but I did share a few captains masts with him and a couple of ribbons from him. I can be reached at "RMCPAYNE@AOL.COM" if anyone remembers those days. Thanks again for the opportunity to talk to the Yarnell. Let me know if there are any pictures or hats left.

I'm not sure what it was, but something over the weekend convinced me to look for the Yarnell. The www site was a nice surprise! She got decommissioned, I take it. Sad. Very sad.I was an ICman onboard from sometime in '74 until October or so of 77. I am loose with the dates here. Please forgive me, but a great deal of time went up in smoke. I was an ICFN, then IC3, then IC2. Course... then IC3. Then... ICFN. XO Waterman - I very PROUDLY wear the gold eagle from one of his hats, that he 'lost' in '77, on my leather vest while I have my knees in the breeze. Drop a line if you care to. It'd be nice to hear from someone else who was aboard.

Decommissioned... sad...

Hello, I was a member of the pre-commissioning detail in Newport, arriving there in Sep/Oct '62. Spent a nice warm winter in Newport going to fire fighting(we were all fighting to be nozzleman & get warm), damage control school, etc., etc. Moved aboard at Boston Naval Shipyard prior to commissioning & served aboard until '65. I was a Missile Technician 2nd class when reporting aboard & a Gunner's Mate second on departure. The Navy did away with surface MT's & threatened to make me an FTM. I requested & received change to GMM. Somehow I ended up as sea detail helmsman. When departing Norfolk for the Med, the navigator had the CON & ordered "left standard rudder" to head out of Norfolk. After I said "Repeat' Sir" 3 times with him getting hot under the collar, I heard the welcome words "This is the Captain, I have the CON, Right Standard Rudder". I responded wiyh "Right standard rudder Aye Sir!" & we were off to the Med with a jaunt above the Arctic Circle & port visit in Amsterdam first. Was invited to & attended de-commissioning in Norfolk. Good ceremony but sad day. Fair Winds & Following Seas, Darrel Cherry CWO (Gunner) USN(RET)

I sent in one story already but it never got posted [SORRY. LOST ONE OF THE STORIES PAGES WHEN MY HD CRASHED]. I was on the Happy Harry
from 2-2-63 to 9-64. I was on her for the commissioning at Charlestown,
Boston. I went to Pre-comm school 9/62 in Newport, RI and then to Class A
signalman school. Sea trial and ASW games with the Thresher. I'll never
forget that night. I had the mid-watch and we were 200 miles north-east of
Boston when we lost contact. I was shinning the signal light in the water
looking for survivors. We went down to GTMO in early spring of 63 when
Castro shut off the water. I have a picture on the signal deck and a tanker
is in the background converting saltwater to fresh. We actually was on the
blockade and we did not really know how serious things were at the time. My
orders were to call up every ship and ask three questions: What ship? What
cargo? and What destination? The only ships that did not respond was; you
guessed it Russian ships. We had six 3rd class. two seconds and a chief. I
still have the commissioning booklet and since I was a signalman, the Union
Jack (old one that was replaced) and a commissioning pennant. What great
memories. The letter from Commander Bob Pringle's son was great. Tell your
dad, Denis Kosar said hello. I spent alot of time on the bridge was him and
Charlie Nelson (First skipper). ANy of my old shipmates still around give me
a call. I live in NY at 516 543-4110. I especially want to know what happen
to JJ Knab from Brooklyn and D. Harley from Pa. Two of my buddies. We drank
alot of 3.2 beer in Norfolk , eat hambergers in Ocho Rio, Jamaica and watched
alot of TV from the 06 level (Bunting locker above the Firecontrol radar).

Ps Is Jenkins or Keske still around they were second class at the time.

Well take care all.

Hello from the son of the first Executive Officer of the Yarnell (DLG-17).
My Dad, Robert C. Pringle was the first exec of the Yarnell when it was
commissioned in the early sixties. My brother, Craig, was the first
person to be treated in the sick bay when he slammed the car door on
his hand as we got out of the car on the dock in Norfolk (I believe
was the port) prior to going on board for dinner.
Dad has related the following story:
When the Yarnell was undergoing acceptance trials prior to being
commissioned, it was operating in the same area where and when the
Thresher went down. The trials were extended and the Yarnell detached
to search. The sea was pretty rough at the time and the Yarnell,
having only one rudder, was a bit slow on the upwind turns. She had
to be run up to full speed to make the turn then slowed back down for
the downwind sweep. I recall seeing the ship when it returned to base
and seeing the metal ladders on the side of the superstructure bent
backwards from the force of the solid water which had swept the ship.
Thanks for the work on the home page, the pictures look great.
Best,
Jeff Pringle

Glad to see someone else remembers the Happy Harry!

I made the Med cruise in 73. Sitting in a bar the night the Arabs and
Israelis decided to have another war. Got underway still half drunk. 35
straight days at sea on station that time.

I also remember the grounding in NY. That was my screw. I was a young MM3
at that time. You were right with most of it - the damage on backing out of
the dry dock was to the other screw. So we got both replaced. I remember it
so well because I had to fill out the supply requisitions ("Make sure you
get the right one") at $56,000 each. Fortunatly the second screw was in
Philly at the Naval Yard.

I still have a pair of Zippo lighters - one says DLG-17 and the other says
CG-17!

For what its worth - I'm going finish pressing my dress whites so I can
spend the 4th of July on the USS Cassin Young (DD-793) at the Charlestown
(Boston) Navy Yard. That's just down from the USS Constitution.

I was on the Yarnell (DLG17) in Bath, Me. as precommissioning detail in 1963 (I think). I left her in April 1964 at the end of my enlistment. I was ET2 at that time. While in Boston, for final fitup and replacement of defective (steamcut) turbines, we were to meet the USS Thresher for ASW exercises. They were lost that day and we spent a week or so looking for the sub.
