Ginny's Guide To Making CD Copies with Exact Audio Copy (EAC)

"Anyone can make perfect CD's using Exact Audio Copy"

This is a simple guide to configuring EAC to make disc to disc copies for beginners. A more thorough guide, that has information on all of EAC's features, is available at the Coaster Factory, but Ginny will not be there to guide you through the process.

This guide was prepared using v0.9 beta 4 of EAC, which at the time of writing was the current version on the website.

Step 1:
Download EAC from http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

Step 2:
Install EAC by clicking on the executable you downloaded and follow the instructions.

Step 3:
Configure EAC for secure mode reading. Open EAC. The following screen should display. If the setup wizard below does not display, select Configuration Wizard from the File menu.

Insert a scratch-free audio disc into your CD drive and click Next.

"Any disc from this spindle will do fine"

If you have multiple CD drives in your computer, you will have more than one option here. For this tutorial I suggest you select whichever drive you plan to use for audio extraction. Click Next.

Select "I prefer to have accurate results". If you select the other option, the Yesswap Gods will come down hard on you! Click Next.

EAC can detect the best configuration for your drive, if your drive is in their database. The TDK in the example is, so I get this screen. I suggest selecting the "I don't trust these values.." option, just to be sure. Click Next.

"Pretty easy so far!"

You should see this screen, click next.

Once the detection is succesful, you should have these results. If your drive says 'Yes" for C2 error information, I recommend disabling it. C2 error information is supposed to detect read errors without the need to read every bit of audio twice on the drive. However, most drives do not implement this feature correctly. If you have it enabled on a drive that doesn't implement the feature correctly, any read errors could go undetected. Click Next for now.

The next step sets up MP3 compression, so if you can click Cancel here if you just want to make CD copies.

"We're so close to making perfect discs.... I can almost taste them!"

If your drive said 'Yes' for C2 error information and you wish to disable it (recommended), Select Drive options from the 'EAC' menu in the program, or simply press F10.

Uncheck the 'Drive is capable of retreiving C2 error informations' checkbox, and click OK.

You are now set up to rip audio accurately using EAC.

"Making purr-fect discs is even more fun than swatting this fake mouse!"

Go on to page two if you would like to use EAC to make disk copies.
