The dream formed years ago, in the mind of Ed, an
avid cyclist, who planned to bike from Buffalo to California in 1972 to
begin work as a graduate student of Mathematics at Berkeley. However, he
accepted a better offer from the University of Rochester, and instead of
riding several thousand miles West, he rode 75 miles East. The dream,
which had been biding its time since then was realized starting in June of
2001. Ed and his son Steve, a 2001 graduate of James Madison University,
Virginia left from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to cycle across the country.
They rode recumbents, equipped with a trailer and panniers. They mostly
camped, but often found a bed and breakfast, motel or hotel in which to
stay.
