Video from a trip on the Volga River and in Huck

This video records a trip on the Volga River, beginning north of Kazan, with stops in Kazan, Samara and Saratov and features a visit to the village Huck. The trip was made in 1993 when Joyce Sterkel accompanied her father to return to his birth village. This is a home video and the images while on the Volga River are interesting, but the highlight is the portion captured while they visited Huck. Mr. Sterkel talks with a German-Russian couple, Jakob and Freda Michaels, and the video also records the village area and its state during this period.

The video can be purchased by sending $20 (includes $5 for shipping and handling) with your name and return address to:

American Historical Society of Germans from Russia
631 D Street
Lincoln, Nebraska 68502-1199

and requesting a copy of the Huck video tape. A copy of the text description of the video contents will be included with your order.

This portion of the text description provides a preview of the conditions in the village that you will view. "At the time of our visit, there were about 3000 persons living in Huck. However, there were only two ethnic German families. Everyone has electricity and TV, but there is no indoor plumbing, one telephone in the entire village, and almost no one has a car. Transportation is limited to farm trucks, including cases of medical emergency. It is very primitive."
