Looking down, all I see,
Is granite under my feet,
Standing alone in a world of stone.
In the twilight of time without reason or rhyme,
No echoing answers to my cries,
As they die in the smothering silence.
Heaven cries in vain,
Washing this dead world with rain,
Until no sign of the past now remains.
And I am dying this time,
It would be kinder to be blind,
Than to be made to stare at gray skies,
Through an artist's eyes.
But at night in the deep,
And recurring waking dream,
Another reality
Is revealed.
And in memories retained,
There are faces, unnamed,
Reaching out with their pain,
From the realm of the insane.
In the depths of our minds,
There are places, we can hide
That no one else can find,
And there we can rot, til we die,
Remembering leaves in the breeze,
And longing to be free,
Like birds on the wing
At the dawn, of the long,
Silent spring.
And so we seek the escape,
Back to the living domain,
And attempt to reclaim,
Our place in the game,
Then the doctor speaks,
And then slowly repeats,
And then beckons to me,
To wake up and be free,
But try and try as I may,
I remain chained and insane,
As night yields to the day,
And the dream fades,
In the haze.
Looking down, all I see,
Is granite under my feet,
Standing alone, in a world of stone.
