Riding Camels

Touring LEWA on Camelback

One of the things I was looking forward to most on this trip, was the tour on camelback. I guess it's just one of those things you gotta experience once! Being a woman of little balance or grace, this was a test, to be sure! I quickly chose the smallest camel, figuring this one would be just my size! The camel lowered itself to my level on bended knee and I anxiously climbed aboard. That first step is a doozie! As it brought itself to an upright position, I thought for sure I was going to end up on the underside, hanging on for dear life! But once we were up - I was good to go….or so I thought. Unfortunately, the saddle wasn't tight enough so it was decided that we had to go back down again! And I thought the getting up part was hard!

Finally, all was adjusted and I was back up and everyone else had mounted their camels as well. I should mention, this is not an adventure recommended for those with a fear of heights. We started on our two hour journey across a section of Lewa. The ride was fine once I got passed the swinging motion and the fear that if I loosened my grip, even just a little, I was going to end up eating dirt. The Maasai leading the trip, one at the front leading my camel and the one at the rear, eventually began to sing. Actually their singing was much more like a melodic chant, and I found it very soothing. It was late in the afternoon and the sun began to set. I traveled on, still thinking…this is all a dream.
